  • Millwood Lake - Arkansas Fishing Report

The Mayfly hatch continues in full swing on Millwood over the past couple weeks. Huge numbers of Mayfly's have the Crappie, Bass, and Bream feeding actively. As of Monday, Millwood Lake is 7" above NCP elevation and continues on a slow fall. The lake Tuesday was at 259.8 and falling; oxbows' water clarity improved. Little River clarity heavy stain with current discharge this week. Millwood Lake tailwater continues a slow fall, elevation near 229 ft-msl with gate discharge at the dam around 5,000 CFS in Little River according to the USACE. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful link page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels. NAVIGATION CONDITIONS ARE IMPROVED on Millwood Lake with reduced discharge rates and flow conditions in Little River. Use EXTREME CAUTION anytime high gate discharge conditions exist.

Surface temps remain stable this week, ranging in 85-90ºF range, depending on location. Continue to use caution in navigation on Little River and Millwood watching for random broken, or floating timber in Little River are in effect. Lots of Little River buoy markers along the main lake channel MAY HAVE MOVED with recent gate changes at the Millwood Dam. Use caution in navigation on main lake river channels where river buoys may be out of channel from recent high winds.

Current along Little River decreased this week with discharge release at the dam, and river clarity ranging 2-5 inches visibility depending on location. Clarity & visibility of Oxbows at 10-20 inches depending on location. Further up Little River near White Cliffs and Wilton Landing has heavier stain conditions. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, gate discharge, rain, or thunderstorms. Muddy conditions on Little & Saline River, and worse further up river past White Cliffs on Little River. Clarity (at Saratoga and Okay area) has improved drastically.

WILTON LANDING on Little River, Millwood State Park, and numerous other campgrounds and boat launch ramps that were closed, have recently REOPENED. Watch for broken timber, trees, and floaters with debris in Little River. Be sure you call your various respective park location to check if has reopened on Millwood Lake.

From the USACE, all campgrounds and parks, & boat ramps ARE REOPENED EXCEPT PARALOMA AND SARATOGA which are in seasonal closures, will reopen in the fall.

Continue to use extreme caution in Little River where river current may have moved or damaged river buoys!

Be aware of missing/broken telephone pole lane markers at upper end of Little Gas Line Cutoff boat lane!

    The Details:

    "<º)))><{ " Fishing & Species Report " }><(((º>"

Largemouth Bass: continue to feed best early, from daylight to around 10am, slowing in the heat of the day. Frogs in Black, June Bug and white have been working near pads and grass early. Chatterbaits in chartreuse sexy shad, and Bream colors (pumpkinseed/black/orange) continue getting a few reactions. Brazalo Custom Lures spinnerbaits in Millwood Mayhem Bream have been working well for the past couple weeks, fished fast and rambunctious near the surface. Frogs like the Live Target hollow body, the Zoom Horny Toad and Bass Assassin Shads continue getting reactions in the pads early. The best reactions over the past couple weeks or so have been from the adolescent Bass from 10-15" and 1-2lb Largemouths. 10" Power Worms in Black/Blue tail, Black Grape, and Plum colors have been working for a few Bass up to 4 pounds. In recent Bass Tournaments, 2 trophy size Largemouths were weighed in over the past couple weeks, post-spawn over 9 pounds each and one of our Guides, Ronald, caught a nice, healthy, and rambunctious 10lb Largemouth last week.

Several 1-2lb Kentucky Bass were found over the past few weeks were hitting hammered chrome Cordell Spoons with white/red bucktail, and Fat Free Shads in Snake Creek, Hurricane creek, and behind points extending into Little River above Jack's Isle.

Acres of floating alligator weed mats are making fishing many types or lures and crankbaits difficult and navigation impossible, in numerous areas of the oxbows, up Little River. Middle of Horseshoe Lake oxbow, inside the cypress tree line on the north and east side, and northeast pocket behind the northern peninsula, is completely matted. We noted some large grass mats floating in Little River this week with debris. Bagley Creek, Red Slough, and south Hickory pockets are vegetation matted thick, made navigation and fishing impossible. Pine Island, Schall, Plum, and Mine Creeks are beginning to mat completely over. The USACE is currently monitoring and evaluating the excessive alligatorweed densities, lake wide. The USACE did conduct an alligator weed beetle release several weeks ago, and are monitoring success rates.

Bass Assassin Shad jerkbaits were working in the same flats and stumps with lily pads as the top water frogs, early in the morning. Best colors over the past week or two, have been Salt & Pepper Silver Phantom, Houdini, and Bluegill Flash in the 5" sizes seemed to draw best reactions. If you can find drops and vertical structure where the alligator weed and lily pads converge on receding flats or deeper drops on secondary points, from 5-6 feet deep tapering out to 8-9 feet deep, custom painted S-cranks and Little John cranks in Bream and shad patterns are still getting random reactions over the past few weeks. Bomber Fat Free Guppys in Splatterback and Citrus Shad colors have been working.

Heavy 3/4oz 1-Knocker and 1/2oz sized Rat-L-Traps in Chrome/Black back, Millwood Magic and Splatterback caught solid Bass in the oxbows of Clear Lake, Horseshoe, and McGuire where the water clarity has much improved over the past couple weeks. Bill Lewis Lures SB57 Squarebills and MR-6 Crankbaits picked up some healthy 1-3 pound Largemouth in McGuire last few days. Best colors working in the oxbows have been the Millwood Magic, Sneaky Shad, Tennessee Shad, or Threadfin Shad colors over the past few weeks.

Bream: Bream have been in a feeding mode for a few weeks, and very aggressive on Mayfly's underneath overhanging willow trees along Little River. A few areas near Jack's Isle, and at Millwood State Park off the banks, and were biting crickets, earthworms, sweet corn, and/or bread and have been heavily feeding on the Mayfly hatch.

White Bass: were still roaming in Little River stacked up behind points in deeper creek channels dumping into Little River and creek mouth junctions in the oxbows. Random reactions were fair, and best on hammered Cordell chrome spoons with a red bucktail. Rooster tails, Bomber Fat Free Shads, and Rocket Shads also caught a few White Bass over the past 2 weeks.

Crappie: Improved on jigs and tubes in planted brush piles in the oxbows up Little River and on main lake, from 8-12 feet of depth. Vertical jigging seemed to work best for jigs. Minnows caught a few 1.5-2.0lb Black Crappie early, but were slow in the afternoon.

Cats: continue to move and feed well in current along Little River. Limb lines, trot lines, and yo-yos have been working for some nice Blues and Cats over the past couple weeks with the increase of discharge at Millwood Dam. Cut buffalo, hot dogs, chicken hearts, and livers have been working over the past couple weeks for some nice size 3-5 lb Cats on trot lines and yo-yos from 8-12 feet deep near current flows in creek channels near the river.
