  • Millwood Lake - Arkansas Fishing Report

As of Tuesday, Millwood Lake is back on the rise again, from the recent flash floods, thunderstorms, and rainfall. The lake elevation on Tuesday was 18" above normal NCP (Normal Conservation Pool) at 260.7 and rising; oxbows' water clarity heavy stained, Little River clarity muddy with current discharge this week. Millwood Lake tailwater elevation near 248 ft-msl with gate discharge at the dam around 19,700 CFS in Little River according to the USACE. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful link page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels. NAVIGATION CONDITIONS ARE IMPROVED, but CAUTIONED on Millwood Lake with high discharge rates and heavy flow conditions in Little River. Debris fields are present. Use EXTREME CAUTION during current high gate discharge conditions.

Surface temps remain stable this week, ranging in 75-80ºF range, depending on location. Continue to use caution in navigation on Little River and Millwood watching for random broken, or floating timber in Little River are in effect. Lots of Little River buoy markers along the main lake channel MAY HAVE MOVED with recent GATE HIGH DISCHARGE RATES. Use extreme caution in navigation on main lake river channels.

Current along Little River increased this week with discharge release at the dam, and river clarity ranging 0-4 inches visibility depending on location. Clarity & visibility of Oxbows at 10-12 inches depending on location. Further up Little River near White Cliffs and Wilton Landing has heavier stain/muddy inflow conditions. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, gate discharge, rain, or thunderstorms. Muddy current was almost everywhere we went on the Little River this week, and worse further up river past White Cliffs on Little River. WILTON LANDING on Little River was recently re-opened due to HIGH CURRENT and pool elevation. Watch for broken timber, trees, and floaters with debris in Little River.

Numerous areas on Millwood Lake are matted with alligator weed mats, and inaccessible for navigation or fishing.

The USACE is currently monitoring and evaluating the excessive alligatorweed densities, lake wide and what corrective action may be necessary.

    The Details:

    "<º)))><{ " Fishing & Species Report " }><(((º>"

Largemouth Bass: were fair early, and slowing down after 9-11 am with fluctuating pool levels on Chartreuse Sexy Shad colored buzzbaits and chatterbaits. The juvenile and adolescent Bass 10-15" inches seemed to be the most aggressive. Black Grape, Junebug Red, or Black/Blue tail 10" worms have been working for some Bass over the past several weeks if you could find some decent water clarity in backs of the oxbows away from Little River current. Bulky 4" Gitzit Tubes with a rattle inside were working, best colors Black Neon or Pumpkinseed/chartreuse tail, randomly. Water temperature stable, but there is still a 1-1/2 feet of fresh water in Millwood over the past week, and its back on the rise again. Largemouths were slower responsive, this past week. A few Bass were caught last week on Horny Toads and Yum Tip Toads 4-8 feet deep in the pads and grass.

Brazalo Custom Lures tandem Spinnerbaits in Millwood Mayhem Bream, and River Shad got reactions over the past several weeks, near stumps and floating alligator weed vegetation. Best water clarity located in back of Horseshoe and McGuire Oxbows, as far away from Little River current as we could get. Main Lake water clarity was heavy stain to muddy conditions in most areas from high discharge volumes at the Millwood Dam.

Lots of floating alligator weed mats are making fishing many types or lures and crankbaits difficult in numerous areas of the oxbows, up Little River. Middle of Horseshoe Lake oxbow, inside the cypress tree line on the north and east side, and northeast pocket behind the northern peninsula, is completely matted. We noted some large grass mats floating in Little River this week with debris. Bagley Creek, Red Slough, and south Hickory pockets are vegetation matted thick, made navigation and fishing impossible. Pine Island, Schall, Plum, and Mine Creeks are beginning to mat completely over. The USACE is currently monitoring and evaluating the excessive alligatorweed densities, lake wide.

Bass Assassin Shad jerkbaits were working in the same flats and stumps with lily pads as the top water frogs, early in the morning. Pumpkinseed-chartreuse tail, Chartreuse Pepper Shad, and Gold Pepper Shiner in the 5" sizes seemed to draw best reactions. Hogs and custom hand-poured Beaver/Bugs in Green Pumpkin with chartreuse dip pinchers, Black/Blue Swirl, and Ayu got random reactions on stumps near lily pads on receding flats from 5-6 feet deep tapering out to 8-9 feet deep.

Custom built chatterbaits in Chartreuse Sexy Shad, Millwood Mayhem Bream, and White Diamond caught a few roaming Bass early, using a Bass Assassin Lit'L Boss Shiner swimbait trailer in Bounty Hunter, Chico's Red Ear, or Houdini located a few 14-15" random Largemouths.

Bream: Bream have been in a prespawn/spawning mode for a couple weeks, in a few areas. Water clarity worsened over the past week again with fluctuating pool levels, and made bed making activities hard to spot. Bream should be good at Millwood State Park off the banks, or on the dock at Jack's Isle this weekend with crickets, earthworms, sweet corn, and/or bread.

    White Bass: No Report.

    Crappie: No Report

Cats: continued to bite well again this week with the increased current along Little River. Limb lines, trot lines, and yo-yos have been working for some nice Blues and Cats over the past couple weeks with the increase of discharge at Millwood Dam. Cut buffalo, hot dogs, cheesebait, and doughballs were working for the past several weeks for some nice size 4-8 lb Cats on trot lines and yo-yos from 8-10 feet deep near current flows in creek channels near the river.

The discharge currently near 19,700 CFS in Little River, according to the USACE. The tailwater below the dam and gates, is around 248 ft-msl, with high volume discharge. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful link page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels, especially during high river flow and discharge conditions at any time on Millwood. NAVIGATION IS CAUTIONED.

Current along Little River increased, clarity ranging 0-4 inches visibility and muddy depending on location. Clarity & visibility of Oxbows along Little River at 10-12 inches depending on location. Further up Little River, near White Cliffs and Wilton Landing has heavier stain & muddy conditions. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, gate discharge, rain, or thunderstorms. WILTON LANDING on Little River off AR71 was REOPENED recently due to high lake pool and heavy current.

Surface temps as of Monday, consistent, ranging 75º early to 80º later in the day, depending on location.

Numerous areas of Millwood Lake are seeing huge increases of matted vegetation and alligator weed, and are inaccessible for navigation or fishing.
