  • Savannah Georgia - Fishing Report

While inshore fishing with Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters Rich Burns and Jim Spicuzza (both Bluffton, SC) caught fought kept and release some nice fish. Trevor Young Age 17 Vicksburg, MI was Captain Garrett’s first mate for the day! And he done good too!

    Inshore Report!
    3 Degrees Situation!
Well, here is where we are in the inshore catching world! You know the old saying, “Everything alive at 65!” which means when the water temp reaches 65 degrees the bite is right! Well, the water was at 65 degrees and then last week the Easter Bunny decided to bring in much cooler air, which then dropped it about 3 degrees. This quick temperature change would shift a solid figured out inshore bite to a not so much biting affair! But here’s the thing that happened! According to Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters the inshore bite was very good, at least if you figured out where the fish has quickly moved. So here’s a tip straight from the Captain Garrett...When water and air temperature are dropped quickly and your go to fishing spot is not working he suggest trying a spot close by the doesn’t look like it should hold fish! Boy, that was a mouth full, but it worked!

While inshore fishing with Captain Kevin Rose of Miss Judy Charters Trevor Young Age 17 Vicksburg, MI caught this beautiful red fish. What was he using as bait, a live shrimp under an adjustable popping cork. The secret to unlocking this bite was Trevor’s popping sequence, which was cast into place, let it sit, take up the slack, pop it, let it sit, retrieve, and repeat. Red fish are very stealthy especially when disturbing noise is made. So therefore Trevor’s noise handed was a good not a scare off the fish off one!

    Welcome to Sharkville!
Captain Phil Ross of Miss Judy Charters is holding a shark that Caleb Meade Rock Hill, SC caught while bottom fishing in the sound with a small piece of frozen shrimp! Caleb’s sister Sofia is his cheering section!
There is a lot going on here! Captain Phil Ross of Miss Judy Charters is holding Caleb’s shark that he just caught! In the first picture Caleb and Angela Wolfe Savannah, Georgia are now touching it! Here’s a shark fact: If you drag your finger from the head towards the tail it will feel very smooth. However, if you drag your finger from the tail of the shark towards its head it will feel just like sand paper. And I always say, “Guess what the shark is doing now? “It is doing a taste test on you!” Caleb is sporting a great shark catching smile in the middle picture. And in the last picture Caleb is kissing his new shark friend good bye! And just like that back to the wild it goes!

While inshore fishing with Captain Robert Brown of Miss Judy Charters Noah Franklin age 9 his brother Asa, older brother Will, and his father Ira had a great time. Milledgeville, Ga. According to story told by Noah the group had a big day! His father and brothers did their best at helping some in regards to catching fish. However, it was confirmed that Noah caught the most, released the most, kept the most, and also caught the biggest spotted sea trout! Now who told me that? Noah himself! And I am saying, “Noah ought to know, because he was there in the catching thick of it all!” When it comes to fishing stories told, kids are the best!

While inshore fishing with Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charters David Baker and his daughter Danielle age 7 of Milledgeville, Georgia has a catch blast! What did they catch? Well, they caught around 46 whiting! According to fishing story told, “The catching got really hectic a few times!” What the heck does that mean? All hooks on deck had a live fish a dangling! As far as bait used and why Captain Matt suggest always keep your expired shrimp (fresh dead shrimp) that happen to fall to the bottom of your live well. Or if a fish hits your live shrimp, misses the hook, but still kills the bait, this is where leftovers become great bait for whiting.

If you like to add to your inshore and offshore fishing spots lists. I suggest purchasing a TOP SPOT chart (map no N232 for inshore) and a Top Spot chart (map no N229 offshore) http://www.offshoremapping.com/produ...g-Maps-c16.htm These charts list coordinates in GPS and they are pretty accurate. In the past I have had fishermen report that coordinated received are not close to the actual spots published on the charts. Fishermen must remember that all GPS unit can be adjusted meaning the coordinates will not all be the same. The best way to combat this situation is to stop about ¼ to 1/8 mile from intended location and motor slowly while watching your fish finder. Believe me, adding this move into all of your fish finding spot equations in only going to enhance your catching abilities and also aid you in finding more fishing spots!

    Savannah Snapper Banks
This is the month where we fishermen know that we have exactly one more month before grouper season opens. (It opens on May 1, 2021 till December 31, 2021.) Offshore fishermen still make way to the banks at this time to take advantage of the incredible amount of large bottom fish available such as vermilion snapper also known as B-liners, white grunt, triggerfish, amberjack, black sea bass, red porgy, and white bone. As far as top to mid water column fish there is always cobia, amberjack, almaco jack, and king mackerel which can be caught while plain old bottom fishing. When bottom fishing cut squid, frozen/fresh cigar minnows whole or pieces, and cut fish are great working baits. I also suggest putting your live well into circulation and keeping all small fish caught to use as live bait. Best live baits are going to be ruby red lips, rock bass, sand perch, vermilion snapper, and pinfish. By using any or all of these suggested baits all fish whether they are bottom dwellers or not they will come a calling or should I say a biting! Why? It is their hungry time of the year!

At this time we do not know the opening dates for the 2021 genuine red snapper season, but it does look like some times in the month of July. For those fishermen that want to keep up with posted dates as they are made available I suggest visiting http://www.safmc.net/ By taking a cruise on this site you can learn of current regulations and those that are coming our way! It is always good being in the know!

An Old time blue water lure that came straight from Captain Ken Kennickell of Miss Judy

    Charters blue water lure locker!

    Gulf Stream
For the fishermen that seeks blue water status this would be the time to make that happen. For tuna, dolphin, Wahoo, Mako shark, and bill fish the 70 mile run it is definitely worth it. For bait I suggest single hooked chin weighted dink ballyhoo and cedar plugs. For a large bite I suggest Ilander lures rigged with horse ballyhoo. This brings on great possibilities for a serious Yahoo Wahoo bite.
High speed trolling should be put high up on your list of things to do to catch big fish. While heading to the stream you cover lots of water so you might as well get the best out of it. Dragging a couple of high speed lures should be next on your list. Here are some web sites that have high speed already proven trolling lures: http://cscustomlures.com/ https://ballyhood.com/products/wahoo-lures/ and
https://www.handmadetackle.com/wahoo-fishing-lures/ All of this high speed lures work. However, my favorite is Ballyhood cowbell style high speed lures. Why? Well, they work and they trigger a much bigger fish bite!

While at the blue water of the stream there is another option and that’s to give bottom fishing a try. With small pieces of squid you catch football vermilion, mega triggerfish, sand tile, knobbed porgy, and fish not even listed in the identification booklet. All fishermen when targeting the snapper grouper species have to use circle hooks. It’s the law! Here’s the good news about circle hooks, all you have to do is to get your bait to the bottom, fish will eat it, try to swim off, and fish will be hooked up! I always suggest checking for current fishing regulations before heading offshore. The best website for up to date federal fishing regulations is http://www.safmc.net/ For those fishermen that would like to receive my weekly fishing report please email me fishjudy2@aol.com and ask to be added. I would be happy to do so!

Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not!
    The Easter Bunny has arrived!

This photo was taken in our kitchen back in the mid fifties by the Easter Bunny!
Even at the request of the Easter Bunny never hide the Easter baskets in the trunk of your car and here’s why!
My father always had a lot of good stuff in the trunk of his car. We never had a truck to throw things in the back of so daddy’s car trunk, to say the least, was always full of something. One afternoon right before Easter, I was in the front seat of the car and daddy said, “I have to get something out of the trunk!” While he jumped out I turned around in the seat and watching his every move. He was funny sometimes the way he would fling his arms. I watched as he opened the trunk and through the crack in the lid I could see most of what daddy was doing. To the right of the trunk were all sorts of things sticking up and then it caught my eye. There was something covered in red tinted cellophane. As I looked even closer it occurred to me that I had seen this sort of packaging before. Just as my small mind started to wonder I watched as daddy pulled something from the trunk while slamming the trunk at about the same time. The red cellophane package got crushed in the process. I heard a loud cracking noise and watched as daddy struggled to get the trunk reopened. After a few seconds I got tired of watching and turned away to play with knobs on the radio. On Easter Sunday morning I jumped out of bed and ran into the kitchen with hopes of an Easter Bunny surprise. As I rounded the corner into the kitchen right there on the kitchen chairs was not one Easter basket, but three. And I might add even though the basket in the middle was a little crushed with a few damaged toys I still ruled when it came to having the most baskets delivered at one time by the Easter Bunny!!

This is me at around 4 years old holding a rabbit that Daddy did not shoot. I must have loved my Patent leather shoes; because I have seen several pictures with what looks like these same pair of shoes. Or maybe my father whom was notorious for purchasing things by the dozens had most likely purchased many pairs!”

Here’s what I remember about Easter and my daddy…

Patent Leather shoes were a must no matter what you wore with them with!
For those looking for a great place to hid that golden egg for the Easter egg hunt here’s a suggestion

Place the golden egg in the gutter (where the water flows out) and then push a hand full of moss in the pipe to keep it there. Let some of the moss hang out as if it is hung in the gutter. Just so you will know when the moss is pulled out the golden egg rolls right out with it. How do I know this…When I was six years old I saw, as well as another golden egg searcher, the moss hanging out of the gutter. While we both started making way to this spot we collided. After running right into each other we both fell and contents of our Easter egg baskets went everywhere. We both watched as another pulled the moss and out rolled the golden egg. Moral of the golden egg story is a simple one…

Before looking for the whereabouts of the golden egg whatever you do, “Always be prepared!” Have your father put scrapes on the bottom of your new patent leather shoes, put your basket down first, and then run faster than the others with the same goal!

For those that don’t know, laying in scrapes on the bottom of your patent leather shoes causes much needed traction especially when dealing with slippery grass! I have to ask, “Where did my father come up with all these things?”

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!
And thanks for reading! Captain Judy
