We've had quite the winter already this year. It's hard to believe it's not officially winter yet. This time last year, the water temp was 60 degrees and I was having my best action of the year. This year, we were in the 50s before Thanksgiving and we've had a couple of massive cold fronts since then.

Not many people like to pay a guide to fish in freezing weather. So I've been able to stay indoors and work on other things since the arctic blast. I've spent a ton of time on my website. I recently embedded my facebook page into all the other pages. Also, I took my Basslog Blog articles from Bassmaster.com and separated them all out into separate articles on my site. Additionally, I've been using the latest technology to give flash to my picture pages and to make all pages compatible with desktop, tablet, or mobile devices. Fortunately, we have a warming trend coming, so it will once again be tolerable to be outdoors. I expect the fishing to be considerably different than it was before the fronts, so a report based on what they were biting last week seems pointless.
The good news is that with colder weather comes bigger fish and an easier bait selection. For numbers, my best baits in 40-50 degree water are drop-shots and lipless crankbaits. For bigger fish, I recommend a skirted jig, deep diving crankbait, spinnerbait, or a lipless crankbait.

Last trip out, there was still a ton of hydrilla in the shallows. I expect most of that will be gone and much of what is left to be dead because of the freeze. But I also expect some of the best fishing this winter to be in the spots that still hold some grass. This is a great time to cover some water with traps and let the fish show you the best spots. I've boated several double digit bass just covering water in the winter. Other great winter spots are road beds and ledges. Those are my best spots for deep diving crankbaits and drop-shots.
