Lake Cumberland fishing report for jan 8th 2014. The water temp is 48 degrees and clear in the lower end of the lake. The winter fishing season is in full swing with most species active.
The crappie fishing has been really good in clear water up the creeks from 10 to 20 ft deep close to cover. The smallmouth fishing has also been good with the floating fly method just starting with the water getting in the 40's. Typically the closer the water the better for this method due to young thread fun shad dying. The striper fishing has been really good with schools of fish in the mid creek section showing up. We have been pulling planer boards with alewife herring from 15 to 50 feet. The fish are super healthy this winter due to abundance of shad in lake.
The river fishing has also been good with good numbers of nice brown and rainbow trout showing up. We have also caught several walleye and saugers while fishing for trout. I like to fish small alewife herring close to the bottom. God bless and get out and enjoy a cool winter day on the water.
