    The lake is at 356.39
    Water Temp is 45-48

There hasn’t been much change since last week, with the cold temps and ice/snow we had then the warmer weather moving in for the weekend I expect the conditions and patterns to be the same.

The water temperatures are slowly climbing. I have seen 45 to 48 depending on the day and area you’re in. But the good news is the fish are biting. Its been a good mid day bite, but that’s typical for this time of year.

There still a lot of current on the lake and that means the bait and fish will be trying to stay out of it. Really cold water and current isn’t a good combination. The water clarity is improving. I’m looking for fish in the second dairy ledges where they can get out of the continuous current, also in some of the channel banks leading into the creeks and bays.

The key baits that I am fishing are Jerk baits, clown and gold patterns are producing some good fish. Shad raps in rootbeer pattern Bag5 pattern that I help design. Also A rigs with ZOOM swimming super flukes and Basstrix hollow body AYU color. I have something that I have done the past year with my A rigs and that’s to use an insert head I designed with Elite Pro. I also use this insert head on swimming just a swimbait. It’s unreal how many more bits I get on this. The lead head is actually concealed inside the swim bait, I’m also getting more life out of my swimbaits, saving me money. Look up eliteprobaits.com or tackleexperts.com to get yours.

Also I’m fishing shallow running crankbaits and ½ ounce black and blue jigs with a ZOOM super chunk in green pumpkin blue flake.
On the warmer days I’ve been able to get them to bite a 1/2 Rat L Trap in root beer and other crawfish patterns the new pitch’n peach is becoming one of my favorites. I’m actually fishing the trap by hoping it off the bottom with short one to two foot hops, shallow rocky channel banks.

Focus on mouths of creeks and on the secondary channel side of Kentucky and Barkly lakes, the current will be less there vs the main river. Look for any wood stumps, laydown or brushpiles that may hold a fish. I will fish the wood several times a day. If I catch a fish off a stump I will go back and hit it again later I have caught some of my biggest fish by doing this. There are lots of shallow flats here and you can find fish on the flats on any sunny day that is warmer. A jig and a Balsa Crankbait in Bag5 rootbeer pattern will catch some giants by doing this. A lot of guys fish plastic crankbaits, but I use mainly balsa this time of year. A wooden crankbait is by far better than plastic when fishing shallow wood cover, it will bounce off wood so much better than plastic increasing my catch ratio. Nothing is worse than seeing a good stump in 3 ft of water and casting to it and hanging, trust me that’s the places the begins get. With wood or balsa crankbaits I can bounce that bait right into the stump and it will deflect, then pause it, Hang on, its all over then. I like a David Fritts Lews Cranking rod 7ft med action with 20lb test Seaguar abrazx fluorocarbon line when shallow cranking.

Ledge and Electronics Class, on the water!
Learn and get confidence by catching fish on the ledges
If you’re new to Kentucky Lake or just haven’t been able to figure out how to fish the hundreds of miles of ledges that it has to offer. Then this class is for you. Fishing the ledges is something a lot of anglers struggle with. Understanding what ledges hold fish, when they hold fish and why they hold fish is something I can teach you. I will help you eliminate 90% of the lake in a short time. See what type of areas hold fish and how to find the bait.
Get on schools of fish and get them fired up! This is some of my favorite techniques on this amazing lake. Just give me a call or email me at
