  • Striper Fishing Anyone

While Guntersville is so well known for its large-mouth bass fishing, the striper fishing might be a big secret for most people that fish the lake. Over the last few years as I have turned to the deeper bite on Guntersville with the on-set of the Alabama-rig; I have discovered that the lake has a great concentration of stripers. In fact as the winter becomes a tough bite in the cold weather the stripers are biting better than any of the winter fish we target.

I have discovered over the last couple of years that you can take a big swim bait in the mid of winter slow roll it under the deep concentrations of bait fish and catch some stripers that will take your breath away not only in size but how hard they fight. We have had times where we had a striper on and it has straightened the hook out that we had it caught on.

One of the best ways to find the stripers on the lake in the mid of winter is to target the seagulls that are diving and feeding on bait fish. Find the coldest day of the year; look for the gulls and work an A-Rig or big swim baits under the bait. You best hold on tight because you are in for the fight of your life when you hook one. Another easy way is to work the rocky deep areas of the lake; stripers like hard cover and deep water and you can put good numbers and size in the boat with very little time spent searching. One thing I have discovered while targeting stripers, is that old saying the bigger the bait the bigger the fish, there is no doubt when it comes to fishing stripers. Use some big seven inch swim baits and you will find some of the biggest stripers on the lake.
If the winter largemouth bite frustrates you, turn to striper fishing and you will have a blast!
