    June 5, 2014

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 359.54 Surface Temperature - 79
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 359.60 Surface Temperature - 79

Both lakes are about one half foot over summer pool. Kentucky Dam has been generating at an average rate of 26,000 cfs over the past few days around the clock. Barkley Dam has been generating at an average rate of 7,800 cfs over the past few days around the clock. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm .

The weather this week has been typical of this time of year with a windy day here and there and scattered afternoon thunderstorms in the lakes area every afternoon or early evening. We had a front pass through the lakes area last night and it brought with it some scattered severe storms and locally heavy rains. This is the time of year everyone needs to keep an eye on the sky for approaching pop up thunderstorms and seek safe harbor before the storms come in as these storms can produce locally high winds and dangerous lightning. The forecast for tomorrow is for a high of 84 and low of 66 with a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms. Wind is forecasted from ESE at 4. Saturday's forecast is for a high of 84 and low of 69 with a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms some of which have the potential to be severe as another front comes through the area. The wind forecast for Saturday is from the SE at 6. Sunday is calling for a high of 82 and low of 67 with a 60% chance of scattered thunderstorms with post frontal wind NW at 10. The forecast through next mid week is calling for more daytime high's in the lower 80's with night time low's in the 60's with a chance of scattered thunderstorms each day.

Although we still have not had any current on the lakes, the ledge bite is holding up this week and overall has been good. Some days have been slower than others and some days better than others. An example of a good day was like today in which we were out for 5 hours and I quit counting my clients keeper Largemouth after 5 limits with the best 5 fish going around 22 lbs. A slower day would have been like yesterday in which we had over a limit of keepers but the best 5 went about 17lbs. on a 5 hour trip. I expect this good bite will continue over the next week.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on ledges on the main lakes as well as around the mouths of the deeper creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on deep diving crankbaits, swim baits, Carolina rigged creature baits, Texas rigged large worms and dragging football head jigs. Largemouth are also being taken on primary points, secondary points and channel banks in the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on crankbaits, swim baits, Carolina rigged creature baits Texas rigged large worms and jigs. Largemouth are also being taken on shallow flats in the creeks and bays near wood cover. These fish are being taken on topwater lures (early and late in the day), spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits and Texas rigged creature baits as they are feeding on schools of small fry.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: Smallmouth are being taken early and late in the day on main lake gravel bars on crankbaits and jigs. Smallmouth are also being taken on main lake ledges on crankbaits, jigs and Carolina rigged creature baits. The numbers of fish are not great but some quality fish have been taken. I had one report of the night time summer bite this week on rocky points and banks on the main lake with dark colored spinnerbaits.

Some of the more productive lures reported this week: Lucky Craft sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Bag5 custom painted medium and deep running crankbaits in blue glimmer, green gizzard shad and chartreuse gizzard shad, Strike King XD10 and XD6 series in sexy shad, parrot and chartreuse sexy shad, Rapala DT 16 in parrot, Big Hammer swim baits in sexy smelt, Slong's spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Charmer timber pups in green pumpkin and watermelon with red fleck, Charmer 10.5 inch ribbon tail worms in plum, D&L baby advantage and football head jigs in Cumberland craw and Oops patterns, Slong's football head jigs in mustard, and Strike King football head jigs in blue craw.

Bluegill/Red Ears: Some Bluegills are being taken off spawing beds in 2-4 ft of water by fishing with crickets and worms under bobbers and with split shot rigs on bottom baited with small jigs tipped with worms. We should expect a late Bluegill spawn with the next full moon this month. Red Ears are being taken on gravel bars in 3-5 ft of water with worms under bobbers and split shot rigs on bottom baited with small jigs tipped with worms. The reports indicate the Red Ear bite to be dwindling with lower numbers being taken.

Catfish: Catfish are being taken on deep rocky banks and also being on the main lake on river channel ledges in 20-30 ft of water by bottom bouncing shrimp and leach combinations but this bite has been reported as slow with the lack of current this past week.

    GUIDE SERVICE:

For those of you that may not be familiar with my service: I am a full time catch and release bass fishing guide. I only guide for bass. I have been guiding for bass full time on these lakes for 18 years and bass fishing the lakes for over 30 years. I do not go out and fish panfish for 4 or 5 days and then try to guide on bass for one or two days. No one knows everything the bass are doing but one thing is for sure, if you only fish for bass day in and day out, you will have a lot better idea of what they are doing and also be familiar with all the different techniques it takes to be a successful bass angler. If you book with my service, you will have me as your guide and you will be guided in the comfort of a late model Z522 Ranger Comanche equipped with 2 Lowrance HDS 10's and top of the line tackle. I provide just for fun bass fishing trips, tournament preparation trips, focused teaching trips and technique instruction. If you are in need of a bass fishing guide give me a call or drop me an email.

This trip not only teaches you how to find the highest percentage ledges but also what you are looking for on your sonar and how to interpret what you are seeing, how to search the ledges, set up on the ledges as well as making decisions on what type lures you should be throwing depending on enviromental conditions.
