  • Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report - FL

Several weeks ago the local opinion was that the female bass in Lake Okeechobee had spawned. The new moon phase in however proved that theory to be invalid. The morning of the New moon phase a wave of large roe laden females made their presence known while we were shiner fishing. Several fish over 8 pounds were caught over the next few days, the largest being an 8.75 lb fish that fell prey to a large wild shiner used by Karry Marnello from Pekiomin Pa., who was accompanied by her husband Mark. The approaching full moon should see this wave of fish move into their spawning grounds where they are more prone to being caught by anglers than at any other time. Shiner fishing is still the better way to catch large numbers of bass as well as giving yourself a shot at catching the bass of your lifetime.

The lake has received a large amount of rain already this spring and Hurricane season has not arrived yet, the level was 12.40 but it will rise as the water from further North along the Kissimmee river makes it way South. How long are the bureaucrats going to let the fate of Lake Okeechobee and the Indian River estuary be held hostage by the sugar industry? The middle of the lake is rife with polluted silt/muck brought in by the Kissimmee and the grasses in the Indian River are nearly non-existent compared to even 10 years ago. A simple overflow dam in the South end of the lake could, and should let water flow South into the Everglades system. After all, how can famed Lake Okeechobee be the headwaters for the World renowned Everglades system if no water from Lake Okeechobee is even allowed to flow into the Everglades due to all of the sugar fields blocking the South end of the lake where the Everglades once were? It's confusing, but the Everglades restoration project calls Lake Okeechobee essential to saving the Everglades. Seems more like a shell game than a real project . It never entered my mind 35 years ago that two incredible fisheries like Lake Okeechobee and the Indian River could become virtual wastelands in my lifetime, but it's happening and it seems as if the COE and SFWMD are not willing to do the right thing. Stop letting water from Lake Okeechobee flow East into the ST.

Lucie canal or flow West into the Caloosahatchee River
The littoral zones or marsh areas around Lake Okeechobee are the one thing that is saving the massive lake from being a barren reservoir. The grassy areas around the lake keep the water clean around the outer bands of the lake, and fishing is as good as it has ever been around the shorelines. The water is warm and the fish are abundant. Big bass, blue gill, shell cracker and many other species of fish abound in the great lake. If you have never visited the lake you should come witness the beauty of the wildlife, and the diverse ecosystem it provides for so many different kinds of animal and birdlife. One huge storm could put it all in peril, unless action is taken soon.
