  • Lake Fork Fishing Report - TX

I've been fishing mostly nights this summer and we've been catching some good quality fish. The topwater bite has been unpredictable, but definitely worth trying. Some days we can't get a bite, while others we get lots of action. I've done best on popper baits and spooks. As a general rule, I like the Spooks if there's a wind and the popper baits when the water is slick.

The water temps are in the upper 80s during the night time. The grass is very good (even matted) in some places, yet non-existent in most of my favorite grassy spots from the past. But don't rule out places just because the grass isn't there. I catch tons of fish in areas without any grass.

At night, I've been doing best on points and humps where shallow water meets deep water. Most of my spots have less than 10 feet of water in some place. Texas rigged craws and big 10 and 12 inch worms are always my favorite night baits. My favorites are black/blue, green pumpkin, pumpkinseed, blue fleck, black/red flake, and June bug. We're also catching good fish on skirted jigs, swim baits, spoons, and drop shots.

This last cold front was really nice in mid-July. At night, the air temps were in the 60s and the lake water felt like bath water. 88 degrees is very hot when it's cool out. For us, the cold front slowed down the bite - and I left for family vacation before the bite turned back on. I'm sure I missed some great action.
