It’s a great time of year to fish Kentucky Lake!
Early summer is here and the fish have staged in a few different areas. I have caught fish on the ledges back in the creeks, mouth of the creeks and even main river ledges.
Depending on the growth of the hydrilla will depend how you can fish the ledge. Some of the ledges are free of hydrilla and some are not. I have been cranking the ledges free of hydrilla early catching some feeding fish. Then I will cast a ¾ football jig in green pumpkin purple with a zoom green pumpkin trailer. Seems like the fish want the bait slow so I have been dragging it. The same goes for fishing the ZOOM Ole monster worm, I have been doing best on a watermelon candy or blue fleck worm.
With the crankbait I have been using a stop and go retrieve to get the best results. In the stained water on the main lake I’ve been using a citrus and a blue and chartreuse, remember a stop and go retrieve has been best for me so give it a try.
For you guys who like to Carolina rig, a ZOOM French fry and a baby brush hog has been catching non active fish. Watermelon or green pumpkin with the tail dyed chartreuse for the French fry and the baby brush hog in watermelon candy green pumpkin purple has been working.
Another pattern that has worked is fishing the grass covered humps on the main lake with a 2.5 Bag5 baits Green gizzard and my favorite the Sexy Citrus. Again even here I am using a stop and go retrieve and trying to hang the grass and rip it free. A ¾ ounce rat-l-trap will also do the trick.
I am fishing my crankbaits on 12 and 15 lb test Seaguar Abrazx fluorocarbon, the 2.5 on 20lb test and then Carolina rigging 17lb test seaguar.
Something else I want to mention is the importance of using your Lowrance units to locate these fish and bait before fishing an area. If I can’t see these deeper fish then I will not even waste my time. So Scan over an area before fishing it. If you find fish and they don’t bite come back to them in an hour or so. Sometimes you just have to move from ledge to ledge to find a group of fish that will be in a feeding mode.

Ledge Fishing on the water class
If you’re new to Kentucky Lake or just haven’t been able to figure out how to fish the hundreds of miles of ledges that it has to offer. Then this class is for you. Fishing the ledges is something a lot of anglers struggle with. Understanding what ledges hold fish, when they hold fish and why they hold fish is something I can teach you. I will help you eliminate 90% of the lake in a short time. See what type of areas hold fish and how to find the bait.
Get on schools of fish and get them fired up! This is some of my favorite techniques on this amazing lake. Just give me a call or email me at
