    Freshies Report!

    Little Eddie Big Fish!

Although I have never met Little Eddie (better known as Fast Eddie to his friends) I did know his father Ed Baich. We fished together and well after he retired we emailed each other for years. Now his son, Little Eddie is carrying on the family’s tradition of catching big fish. Eddie is holding the shrimp of the three Chinook salmon that he caught. This fish weighted in at about 20 pounds and was caught while fishing in the Rogue River. According to Eddie the Chinook arrive around June, lay their eggs, stay in the river, and then go to their reward. (Go to fish heaven)

I don’t know about Little Eddie, but in my book this fish would have weighed in at way over 20 pounds. Looks like a 35 pounder to me! So for old time’s sake, let’s say, “This fish was so big it would not fit in the picture!

Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not!

    Blue lights and blurred vision!!
When it came to cars, our family was always a Chevrolet, Ford, and Cadillac kind of a family. And the most I could say about my father when it came to cars is he liked the ones with fins! So, in 1973 when I told my father I wanted to by a 1973 Datsun 240 Z he remarked or should I say screamed, “You have got to be kidding!” By the time I told my father what I wanted to do I had already road by the Datsun show case room located on Stephen Avenue. The car I wanted was just like the one shown in the picture above. Although he was totally against this desire he still drove me over to the car lot.

Once arriving we were greeted by a salesman and of course my father wasn’t interested in talking to them. He wanted to talk to the owner. I wish I could remember his name. I remember what he looked like, because every time daddy would quiz him about this car his eye brows would raise up another notch higher. My father didn’t want me to buy this car so no matter what the dealership owner said “It was all wrong!” And once my father found out that the car in the show case was not a new car, but we were still being charged the full price the arguing really began. The owner said, “The car only had 4,000 miles on it and the reason we are charging full price is because we don’t offer discounts on these cars. Then he said, “We don’t get that many of them.” My father never heard that last statement he was too busy heading for the door. Once he got to the door he said, “Write the check, if you want, and let’s get out of here!” I wrote the check for a little over $5,000.00 and all my father could do was shake his head. This was the first time I brought a car without even driving it! However, once I sat in it I knew I had to have it. It fit me like a glove and my mind raced thinking about all the fun I was going to have while driving it fast.

Exactly how many speeding wreck less driving tickets did I get? I really can’t remember. However, there was this one ticket that really almost got me in a lot of trouble. All I can remember about this one I was late to some sort of downtown function and I was flying down double lane one way Drayton Street. Good for me the cars were spaced just enough apart that I could down shift, switch lanes, and get out in front of those driving the stupid speed limit. The blue light must have come on as I was passing Forsyth Park, which as I remember was a blur of passing combo colors. The azaleas were in bloom and I caught them out of the corner of my eye. After all I had to watch what I was doing at least somewhat! As I down shifted, I was looking for a place to pull over. Now the policeman with the light now had turned the siren on. At the time I felt it was over kill for sure. However, I wanted to push the limit so I went a little further just to tease the monkey in the blue suit. I finally pulled over in the lane by Pinky Masters. All the while thinking that maybe I could run in after this was over and grab a cold one for the rest of my journey since I was already late and was going to now be much later now!
As soon as I came to a stop, I quickly adjusted my rear view mirror hoping to see a friendly cop smiling from ear to ear. At least that is what they normally did when they stopped me. Well, after taking a look I knew this was a waste of time, because I did not recognize this face and he was not smiling. After handing over my driver license the cop fired off this question, “Miss Helmey are you in a hurry?” And of course please remember I was 21 years old and so full of myself that I had to say, “Yes Mr. Officer I am and could you please get this over with?” Or something like that. Well, I could see that what I had said was not very funny to the policeman holding my license. The officer then said, “Do you know that you were driving at speeds of over 80 MPH?” Heck, I was surprised; I thought I was going faster! (But I only thought this I didn’t say it!) As he began writing the ticket I wondered, but only for a moment, how my father’s lawyer Mr. Robert Duffy was going to get me out of this one. However, at twenty-one and driving a fast car I didn’t think about it very long. Just so you readers know, my father and Mr. Duffy did get me, believe it or not, out of this ticket. The story told to the judge was something like this…it was a new car; she really didn’t know how to drive it, and something about it being so close to the ground that I didn’t realize the speed I was going!

This car was simply amazing. It cornered like it was on rails! A phase that you all thought was made popular my Julia Roberts in movie “Pretty Woman!” The car’s speed odometer went as high as 160 mph. Now I never made it to that number, but I got it way over 100. During this time there were no traffic lights on Island Expressway and it was basically my personal race track. Since we never had policemen on the islands I was never stopped on Captain Judy’s personal speedway!

Why didn’t I keep this car? Well I traded it in for a 1994 white Corvette! Still yet another very good driving even faster story! Coming soon to one of my fishing reports!
