The Ledge Bite
The ledge bite is still good; the current is strong due to all the heavy rains. I am finding smaller schools of fish, which is typical for summer. Some of the schools are moving, the bait will move so you just have to relocate them. I am seeing more shad move shallower into secondary ledges, which is not typical but they are doing it. The bass will follow the food source no matter where it goes, so stay open minded.
The main lake ledge bite is around 15 to 20 foot depths and my boat is sitting on the main river channel (30 foot approx.). The secondary ledges I’m sitting in 20 foot throwing up on 10 to 12 foot working the bait off the ledge.
I’m still catching most of my fish on a football jig ¾ to 1 ounce, with a ZOOM fat Albert twin tail. This trailer works great it stays compact to the jig and with the current or any little movement the legs will give action making the bait look real to the fish.
The fish are biting good early then they may slow a little just keep fishing the area or come back to it. These fish will feed then let the bait settle then feed again. I see many guys moving up on the ledges fishing 10 minutes then leaving. They are missing a lot of the bite by moving around to much. If you see a lot of bait and bass in the area stay with them just a little bit longer and again hit them several times a day.
I want to help other anglers catch and find fish, so if you need help let me know.
You can catch some fish cranking the 15 to 20 foot depths with a crankbait or swim baits.
Recommended equipment: Deep crankbaits a 7’6” to 7’11” Lews Crankbait rod with a Lews reel spooled with 12 to 15lb Seaguar Flourocarbon.
Jigs: 7’ to 7’6”Lews rod, I like a rod with length when fishing jigs on ledges, you want a rod that will take up line quickly on the hookset and still be stiff enough to set the hook, without being too stiff to fish and a Lews reel spooled with 15lb Seaguar fluorocarbon, I prefer the AbrazX.
The Grass Bite
The grass has really done well again this year. I’m catching some good fish on the frog now, also I’m fishing the outside edges with a Rat-L Trap early and also in the lanes of the grass, small ditches. I want the Trap to snag in the grass then rip it free, this is drawing more strikes for me. Also a 2.5 square bill crank bait is doing well my best color is the Bag5 green gizzard, and in the trap I am fishing Black/Chrome. I am fishing both of them on 15lb test and a high speed Lews reel.

Ledge Fishing on the water class
The fish are on the ledges good and it’s a good time to learn and get confidence by catching fish on the ledges
If you’re new to Kentucky Lake or just haven’t been able to figure out how to fish the hundreds of miles of ledges that it has to offer. Then this class is for you. Fishing the ledges is something a lot of anglers struggle with. Understanding what ledges hold fish, when they hold fish and why they hold fish is something I can teach you. I will help you eliminate 90% of the lake in a short time. See what type of areas hold fish and how to find the bait.
Get on schools of fish and get them fired up! This is some of my favorite techniques on this amazing lake. Just give me a call or email me at
