    Savannah Snapper Banks Report
    Fishing with the big boys!

    Wednesday September 17, 2014
The fishing team and their nicknames revealed!

Captain Kathy Brown and me (Captain Judy) took Steve Howell, Frank Murry , Bob Rothman, and Stan Walters to the Savanah Snapper banks for a drop you hook catch a fish kind of a day!

It was one of those fish days that you could only hope for, which were sunny skies and almost calm sea conditions. As we rounded the W2 Wassaw Sea Bouy we knew the ride wasn’t going to be too bad. While crusising at a steady 20 knots we hit the back side of the snapper banks in less than two hours with high catcing expections on our mind!

Since our bait populations (spanish sardines, cigar minnows, and etc) at the aritificial reefs did not matarialized this year the only bait we had was what we caught while bottom fish. So therefore in the live well we had assorted sized of sand perch, rock bass, vermilion snaper, pinfish also known as sailiors choice, and ruby red lips also knows as fire mouth. Most of these baits shown no signs of stress and look pretty darn healthy. So we used them every chance that we could. However, while looking to hook up a grouper we did not, but it was not for trying. While using live baits as well a small pieces of squid we caught all size amberjack from smallest to the largest some weighting in at around 40 pounds. While fishing with the group here’s what exactly happened…Frank “ hooked up every time” Murray caught the most fish, Bob Rothman had hands down without a doublt the most prefect fish catching smile, Stan “big fish catching” Walters had the biggest fish on for the fishing day, Captain Kathy Brown came up with the most effective baits, and then there was Captain Triple Trouble Steve Turkey Lips Howell, which hands down cornered the fish day with quotes and jesters that are guarteed to last for a forever!

Stan “big fish catching” Walters fighting the big one on very light tackle, Frank “ hooked up every time” Murray, (yellow shirt) Bob “most prefect fish catching smile ever” Rothman (green hat) Captain Triple Trouble Steve Turkey Lips Howell, (white shirt) and Captain Kathy “greatest pin point gaffer of all times” Brown!

Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not!

Little Captain Judy (must have been born with the captain’s cap and my cowboy boots on!) and Mike Dunford (neighbor) maybe trying to climb or push this tree over!
    Doves All The Way

From the early age of six my father raised me as a single parent. Starting at this time he taught me how to drive a boat, bait a hook, swim, and hunt everything that moved or not. My father always said, “If you kill it you have to eat it!” There was this one time where I had killed a few turtles and of course I had to bring my kill home. Well to say the least we had turtle soup that night. And from this lesson I learned it wasn’t so much fun eating what I haphazardly killed. I did learn that a turtle has all different kinds of tasting meat. According to my father some sections taste like pork, some sections taste like beef, and some sections taste like chicken. While eating turtle soup I can’t say it tasted like any of the above. However, what I can say, “I didn’t like it!”

My father’s cooking was anything but the norm. Out of all of his dishes I loved his famous ketchup gravy the most. And believe me just about everything that he fried went into to ketchup gravy. On some occasions I just poured the gravy straight on to my white bread and made a full meal out of it. This was especially when things in the gravy had what looked still attached heads, legs, and feet. My father did love to eat so learning how to cook was on his list of things to teach me. And that is when cooking became a somewhat of a ritual for daddy and me. We both pitched in, which made the toll of cooking not so bad. The end result was that we both wanted to eat the finish product at least on most occasions. I wouldn’t go into explaining what the kitchen looked like afterwards, but that is entirely another story that needs to be told. This is where my father came up to disposal dishes, which meant if you can’t clean it throw it into the backyard!

There was this one occasion that I remember where eating the end product was questionable. For instance, the time that daddy brought home some doves that he had shot on one of annual ritual bird hunting trips. He had already de-feathered them. All I was supposed to do was to cook them up, which I did. After all we had done it together loads of times at least as I could remember at the time. However, I left out one important step, which was removal of the “insides.” Boy was daddy surprised when he bit into that first bird!

Here’s the recipe that my father and I used…and it works whether you remove the insides or not! So therefore it could be considered a two-fold recipe!

Baked Doves with everything except the feathers!

    By Captain Judy Helmey

6 whole de-feathered Doves (I highly suggest removing the insides)
    1 cup Apple cider vinegar
    1 stick Butter
    Salt and pepper to taste

    Pre heat oven 350 degrees

Wash birds and dry. Then heat apple cider vinegar, butter, salt, and pepper in pan on stove. Wrap birds up in tin foil. Before closing tin foil pour warmed ingredients over birds and tightly close foil. Place in oven cook for about 30 minutes and then open package so as to let the birds brown. I suggest putting the wrapped up birds in some sort of pan. So if you develop a leak the liquid will be contained and not in your oven. It has happened to me before! The fire it caused almost set the house a blaze!

Thanks for reading..and if you try out my recipe, please send pictures and let me know how it turned out! Captain Judy
