    Inshore Reports

    Inshore Fishing Report
Well, I got to tell you the inshore fishing during the hot months was to say the least most of the time, slow, especially when it came to catching red fish, spotted sea trout, and flounder. However, since the water temperatures have dropped the bite has popped! Our inshore captains as well as our customers are definitely enjoying picture taking moments at the dock.

As far as best baits to us, well, live shrimp would be the ticket to this big fish catching ride. As for as best bait presentation I suggest popping cork, traditional adjustable corks, or just plain naked. (Leader only no float and no weigh, just bait swimming) Another good thing about this time of the year is that live bait will last longer in your live well. Yes you still have to make sure you have good water circulation, but you aren’t any longer dealing with warmer water temperatures killing your bait. (One less aggravation) Bait is snappier during this cooler water temperature times. And if there is one thing I know about a fish is that most of the time chasing something to eat is what they do best!!

Inshore fishermen that enjoy “going to artificial baits” as their weapon of choice, it is that time of the year, too. Best patterns are going to be those that look like a shrimp. Believe me when I say, “There is lots to choose from when cruising the tackle shelves!” Artificial bait that come impregnated with scent or in a secret sauce is better and will work especially well when the fish gets the opportunity to smell it before they eat it. These bait are known for bringing in a bite from afar.

    Old Style Fish Attractant

Right on the label it advertises multi-use product! And believe me this is true!

And then there is another type of artificial bait that worked also…
This artificial bait doesn’t come with any scent or sauce. It basically, when worked, triggers the bite. This is what I call old school bait. Now, back in the old days, before impregnated scents, sauces, and soups my father used a secret ingredient which he sprayed on all baits. And when I say all baits, I am talking about inshore and offshore, heck he even sprayed his knees and elbows with it. Some fishermen soaked all their lures in it. You most likely have used this stuff a hundred times before it’s the ever popular WD 40. (And you most likely used it for something else!) Now according to my father the original WD 40 mix was made with more of a potent penetrating ingredient and was not harmful to your skin as the current ones warns. Believe me, my father should know that for sure, because he wore it and smell like WD 40/Old Spice most of the time! Heck, maybe it was the combination of Old Spice and WD 40! I plan on doing a test and will let you know my findings.

    Offshore Artificial Reefs

Three young fishermen and one Atlantic Sharpnose Shark

Captain Deidra is holding Caleb, Matthew, and Gage’s just caught Atlantic sharpnose shark. It was a catching family affair. While holding the shark, Deidra explained, “If you rub your hand down from the head to the tail of the shark its skin is smooth. Howeever, if you reverse this move the skin is very rough.” My father always told me that sharks have taste sensors in their skin. So therefore when you rubbed its skin it might just have been getting somewhat of a taste of you!

Here’s what this shark did before landing it…

Before the shark was fought, caught, and released it made cut bait out of Gage’s fish! All he could say was, “What happened?” And all I could say was, “The shark cut your fish like I have seen a spiral ham sliced!”

    Artificial Reefs Live Bait Report

While bottom fishing at the artificial reef “L Buoy” last week I saw lots of live bait on the surface. Not a bunch of birds or fish feeding on them, but there were lots of surface action. I rigged up a sabiki rig and caught 4 to 6 baits every time that I dropped near the school. What was in the schools? The prefect bottom fishing side Spanish sardines and cigar minnows! So if you are headed to the snapper banks to do a little bottom fishing I suggest making a stop here to try and pick up some live baits.
    Jelly Fish Invasion

Check out this picture..this is a lot of jelly fish..and this is what I call “Star fruit shaped thimble jelly fish. Will they sting you? Most likely! They are more for looking than touching!

While bottom fishing about 10 miles offshore we found ourselves involved in a somewhat of a jelly fish invasion! These so called thimble jelly fish have a shape similar to star fruit!
