    Blue Water Report

This is a close up picture of a sword fish’s. Brought to you by The Page Boys!

Upon arriving at the South Ledge the fishermen found themselves in 81 degree water. After trolling over and around this area for over several hours they had one hit/miss Wahoo bite and landed two 20 pound Mahi Mahi. They switched gears and started bottom fishing and caught a little of everything from football vermilion to jabbing trigger fish to monster size sea bass to ledge hugging grouper. After the bottom bumping affair ended, Captain Tommy headed offshore to deeper waters. As the day light was fading they made way offshore and stopped at about 1,700 feet, which was holding a surface temperature of 84 degrees. The crew rigged sword fish baits and strategically lowered them at different depths with the deepest bait being placed at around 500 feet. While drifting in the darkness, watching, and waiting they finally hookup. When the glow stick that was attached to the deepest bait started to surface it was thought by all that they were dealing with a solid sword fish hook up! However, once they tried to put a little tension on the line the hook or the wrapped leader gave way!

What did we learn from this blue water report?

Any time fishermen catch dolphin (Mahi Mahi) while trolling at this time of the year around the south or Triple ledge this is a good thing. Normally the Triple Ledge and South Ledge are guarded especially during these hot water temperature times by some of the biggest meanest bad-est sharks I have ever seen. There was this one time when approaching this area with a full trolling spread that I watched as exposed fins on the surface headed our way. And we couldn’t get the trolled baits in fast enough, so therefore we ended up with 4 extra strong reel emptying hook ups. Well, what the heck, the customers had fun pulling the sharks in and I had one heck of the time keeping the lines straight.

We also learned know that the bottom fishing in 15 to 200 feet is simply awesome! I used to always tell my customers drops to the bottom and then start reeling up. Believe me once on the bottom fish hits resulting in hook ups are imminent.
As far as sword fishing goes off the coast of Georgia it is normally much better when the water temperatures have cooled down a bit. Now we know from this particular report that the black fin tuna have not arrived. However, we do know that as the water temperatures drops the black fin will start showing up!

    Winner Winner

Bonnie Mims and Captain Kathy are holding her just caught black nose shark. Believe me when I say, “We don’t catch at lot of these sharks in this area!” And had Bonnie not known her way in regards to correctly bringing in a large fish on “light tackle and no steal leader” all would have been lost. As you can see Bonnie got her fish!

Winner of the biggest fish! Bonnie Mims!

If you would like a fish that pull some serious drag then I suggest giving barracuda fishing a try! These fish are big, strong pullers, and also can perform some amazing acrobatics! Heck, what’s not to like?

It’s that time of the year where you really never know what you might catch while bottom fishing! All I can say, “It’s a drop your hook catch a fish kind of a fishing trip!

    Mrs. Shirley Jean Collins

    1940-2014
A few holidays ago Alan, (Captain Alan Collins) Shirley’s son dropped off a cake that he had his mother make special for us. While Alan was heading out the door he turned and said, “You aren’t going to believe how good my mother’s cakes are. Well, to say the least I found out as soon as we had that first taste. Katy and I actually ate the cake in two days. If I am not mistaken I believe we had it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I called Mrs. Shirley to thanks her for the wonderful cake. As we talked, I mentioned that my niece was coming for a visit and Mrs. Shirley said, “I would be happy to bake you a cake for this occasion!” And she did! Well, and this is how this marathon cake eating event took place. When my niece Cindy arrived with a couple of her friends I asked if they wanted a piece of cake. At this point I had not cut the cake. Now it is time to make a long sweet story short: As we talked, we all started out with a small piece of cake, because we didn’t want to ruin our supper. With forks in hand everyone started picking at our wonderful tasting center piece as we finished off Mrs. Shirley’s cake. The bottom line is this: On this night absolutely no plates or supper was needed after all!

I did not get to spend as much time with Mrs. Shirley as I did with her husband Homer and her grandson AJ. However, the time that I did it was most memorable. She always had a caring smile on her face. Even in sad times Mrs. Shirley looks as though she was always trying to be strong so as to ease some else’s pain. And if you ever spent time with Mrs. Shirley then you most likely could say, “I have spent time with an angel! In my book that is exactly what she was!”

My sincere condolences to the Collins Family, Captain Judy Helmey and Katy Goettler
