  • I've enjoyed the outdoors and fishing for as long as I can remember. It was a way of life and still is to this day. Now I run my own guide business and fish tournaments across the country. If your looking for a good, laid back, fun time on the water or some serious learning give me a call or drop me an email. I fish Kentucky and Barkley Lake along with winter trips on Lake Okeechobee.

  • Kentucky/Barkley Fishing Hype Report - KY

Lake Conditions: Both lakes are still being drawn down to winter pool and are almost there with both lakes sitting around 354.70. With the lakes getting close to winter pool the TVA has slowed the pull of water through both dams with KY down from 100,000+ to 53,000 CFS and Barkley has dropped from 60,000 to 25,000 CFS. Both lakes have a lot of color to them but should start clearing as the current slows and the sediment gets a chance to settle out.

Weather: It was a wonderful week of weather around the lakes this week. You can tell fall has settled in with highs in the upper 60’s and some cool nights in the low 40’s. We look to see a warming trend over the weekend before a cold front pushes through the area Tuesday bring some thunderstorms and cooler temps with it. Expect mostly sunny skies over the weekend and highs pushing 80 degrees. Tuesday cold front with usher in thunderstorms and cooler temps with highs running in the mid 60 for the remainder of the week.

Bass Fishing: You hate to say it as a guide but it’s just not easy right now. Probably one of the toughest fall bites I can remember in some time. The weather the last couple of weeks didn’t help with the high winds and torrential rains. Though no matter there are always fish to be caught and as it’s been most of the past month the bite is all over the board. With all the current in the lakes main lake points have been holding fish along with drops just inside the mouth of the bay and creeks. We’ve caught most of these fish on Outkast Tackle touch down shakey heads and a Big Bite Baits squirrel tail worm and Carolina rigged Big Bite Baits coontail worm. There are still main lake flats fish to catch but with the heavy current and dirty water this hasn’t been a strong as it could be. We’ve caught these fish mostly on top water and spinner baits like the Damiki Rambler and the River2Sea Whopper Plopper and long with Slongs 5/8oz Blueglimmer. The grass fish have come on few different baits depending on the day but with the cloud cover this seemed to be on the outside edge and an Outkast Tackle swim jig, spinner bait and buzz bait have worked well. There are baitfish in the backs of the bays also but not all of them have bass. You need to hunt around to find them and to that we’ve been throwing square bill crankbaits like the SPRO Fat John 60 and lipless crankbaits in shad colors or blue glimmer custom painted by Bag 5 Baits.

Crappie: We did a couple more trips this week and they weren’t jumping in the boat yet but we did manage to catch some descent bags of fish. As the water continues to cool of this bite is going to keep getting better and better. We vertical jigged jigs tipped with minnows in brush between 10-15 feet deep. I do not spider rig but have talked to some guys that have caught them as shallow as 4-6 using this method. This should shape up to be a great fall crappie bite.

White/Yellow Bass: We didn’t purposely fish for these this week but did catch a bunch while crappie fishing around brush on top of the flats inside the bays and creeks.
