  • I've enjoyed the outdoors and fishing for as long as I can remember. It was a way of life and still is to this day. Now I run my own guide business and fish tournaments across the country. If your looking for a good, laid back, fun time on the water or some serious learning give me a call or drop me an email. I fish Kentucky and Barkley Lake along with winter trips on Lake Okeechobee.

  • Fishing Hype - Barkley and Kentucky Lakes report

    Lake Conditions:
Barkley - 360.20, 23,400 CFS, Light Stain to Stained in some bays with water temp in mid 80’s
Kentucky - 360.10 64,000 CFS, Light Stain with temp in mid 80’s

Weather: We went from wet too tropical with highs running in the upper 90’s pushing heat index readings into the 105 range this past week. We got a little reprieve midweek but today through the weekend it looks to be a scorcher with highs again back near 100 then a little cool front will push through Tuesday night bringing a chance of rain and storms but temps will again jump back to the upper 90's later in the week. Keep yourself hydrated and wear the proper clothing as it’s very easy to get heat stroke in these conditions. Remember to keep on eye on the sky as this is the time of year a stray popup thunderstorm can ruin your day in a quick hurry.

Bass Fishing: Inconsistent is the easiest way to sum up this weeks fishing. With the water high most of the week it has really scattered the main lake fish out. Along with the strong current in both lakes with the TVA trying to get the lakes back down to normal pool has pushed many fish into the mouth of the bays. These are the fish we’ve been able to catch rather than trying to chase down the fish that were on main lake flats and ledges. Keying on main lake points and even some close secondary points that had deep water close by was the ticket. We caught most of these fish on either a Outkast Tackle shakedown shaky head and the T2 football jig slowly working it down the break. The shallow bite has seem to died off for us as the water levels have returned to normal. Unlike the spring when the fish want to be shallow and will make the falling water push them out fish in the summer and fall will bail when they start feeling the water dropping. I would expect to see things return to normal by the end of next week as the lake levels stabilize and the current is slowed down.

White Bass and Yellows: We spent most of the week chasing the feisty fighter while the largemouth seemed to be rather inconsistent these guys were very eager to bite. They are starting to show up with more regularity every day and now with some current flowing throw the lakes it’s been a much better bite. Over all presentation has been pretty simple as we’ve been either vertical jigging a blade bait or small spoon over schools that we find along main river channels, main lake points and humps. When the bite seems to get a little tough you can always drop a jig and minnow on them and they simply can’t resist that easy meal. Lake Barkley is where we’ve spent most of our time with pretty descent results. Most of the fish have been stripes and yellows with some nice whites mixed in. Anytime your using a blade bait you’ve got the possibility of catching anything and we’ve caught it all this week from crappies, largemouth bass, catfish and even drum.

Crappie and Bluegill: No report as we haven’t fished for these critters for a couple weeks. I have noticed on Kentucky Lake a fly hatch that had bluegills feeding on them under the over hanging trees.
