Lake Conditions:
Barkley - 359.75, 23,400 CFS, Light Stain with water temp in mid 80’s
Kentucky - 359.60 63,000 CFS, light stain with temp in mid 80’s
Weather: We enjoyed some descent weather this week with a few thunderstorms that popped up in the evenings for the most part. The up coming week looks great with dry weather over the weekend with a front pushing through Tues and Weds that looks to bring some rain and then dry again into the following weekend. Temps look to run in the mid 90’s so keep yourself hydrated and wear the proper clothing as it’s very easy to get heat stroke in these conditions. Remember to keep on eye on the sky as this is the time of year a stray popup thunderstorm can ruin your day in a quick hurry.
Bass Fishing: Inconsistent is the easiest way to sum up the ledge fishing. With the water high most of the past 3 weeks has really scattered the main lake fish out. The TVA is still running strong current through both lakes trying to get them back down to seasonal levels which should be in the 358.50 range still has many fish pushed into the mouth of the bays. With all the baitfish shallow also I’m not sure how soon we will see the main lake bite come back. We’ve spent most of the week trying to catch offshore fish with limited success and almost everyone we caught was on a Big Bite Baits B2 worm around stumps on flats. I don’t like having to fish shallow this time of year knowing the size of fish offshore but have forced myself the past few days to do so and it’s been well worth it. These are the fish we’ve been able to catch rather than trying to chase down the fish that were on main lake flats and ledges. Keying on main lake points and even some close secondary points that had deep water close by along with shallow grass that still had water in it was the ticket. Whacky rigging a Big Bite Baits trick stick and a Outkast Tackle swim jig have been the go to baits.
White Bass and Yellows: This is what we’ve spent most of the week chasing while the largemouth seemed to be rather inconsistent these guys were very eager to bite. They are starting to show up with more regularity every day and now with some current flowing throw the lakes it’s been a much better bite. Over all presentation has been pretty simple as we’ve been either vertical jigging a blade bait or small spoon over schools that we find along main river channels, main lake points and humps. When the bite seems to get a little tough you can always drop a jig and minnow on them and they simply can’t resist that easy meal. Lake Barkley is where we’ve spent most of our time with pretty descent results. Most of the fish have been stripes and yellows with some nice whites mixed in. Anytime your using a blade bait you’ve got the possibility of catching anything and we’ve caught it all this week from crappies, largemouth bass, catfish and even drum.
Crappie and Bluegill: No report as we haven’t fished for these critters for a couple weeks. I have noticed on Kentucky Lake a fly hatch that had bluegills feeding on them under the over hanging trees.
