LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 2.3 FEET, CLEAR & UPER 80’S

Spotted bass fishing is good. There is a good top water bite both in the mornings, as well as in the afternoon when the sun is up. We continue to start most mornings working schooling fish that are roaming in 5 to 40 feet of water near points and humps. Top water such as a chug bug and Gun Fish have worked, as well as a SuperSpin thrown into the blow ups. After the first hour, we switch to focusing on the brush in 20 to 30 feet of water with a drop shot, Chattahoochee Jig or Davis Shaky Head. We are targeting brush in that depth range on main lake points and humps, as well as in the mouths of the major creeks. We are also starting to get some bigger drop shot fish in the 30 to 35 foot range as the fish start to move out deeper, a normal progression for this time of year and the hot weather we have been experiencing. To the contrary, we have found some shallower fish on rocky points some days, and these fish seem to fall for a Shaky Head or Jig quickly. Once late morning hits, we then have switched back to the top water bite over brush, as well as the drop shot and jig. Here is what I have open for trips in July: 27 and 28. I am also booking for August as well. Call to book your July or August trip now and don't forget to register for the August 15 Seminar! I expect the top water, drop shot, jig, and Superspin to be the main techniques for August.

REMINDER: I am excited to announce that my next Seminar has been set. Saturday, August 15, 2015 will be the next installment in the Jimbo Seminar Series. The last one was very well attended as we maxed out space with over 100 people, so we have found a larger venue to host the next event. We will focus on techniques for fall and Early Winter Fishing on Lanier, and will cover key topics such as: Brush Fishing, Top water and Swimbaits, Deepwater Dropshot, SuperSpin in the ditches, Effective Use of Crankbaits in the fall, Spoon Fishing, Early Winter Jig Fishing, along with Lure and Tackle choices with examples for every technique. We will have more vendors as well as some great door prizes and raffles. Refreshments will be served. Seminar will start at 8:30 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM. Doors open at 7:30 AM and we will have a mid morning break. Also, for those interested and to make sure everyone's questions get answered, I will host a special post seminar round table from 12:45 PM 1:30 PM for anyone that wants to stay afterwards. The event will be held at Grace Chapel here in Cumming, which is conveniently located off Exit 13 from GA 400 at 6755 Majors Road. Call me direct or email me to register. 770 542 7764 or jim@laniermapped.com. Cost is $89 if you register and pay by August 1, 2015, or $115 at the door. Can't wait to see you all there for what promises to be another outstanding event that is sure to get you prepared for the awesome fall fishing on Lanier!

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishon .com

Striper fishing is good. Not much has changed this week. I have had a number of questions on summer lake stratification this week and I thought it warranted a little more explanation. The lake is stratified and the thermocline is at 25 to 27 feet. Summer lake stratification is the process of a lake separating into three layers: a top warm layer (currently at 86 degrees), a transition layer (approximately 2 foot in depth) and a deep cold water layer currently in the mid 50 degrees). The transition layer is referred to as the thermocline. Because the Striped Bass is temperature sensitive and cannot survive in 80 degree water getting your baits down below the thermocline is critical. You should ensure you are fishing your Blueback herring at 30 to 80 feet deep. A lot of you have line counter reels which are a great tools. However, they will be off depending on how full you spool your line. To calibrate your line counter zero your reel at surface level and drop it down to 30 feet. Use you electronics to verify the actual depth. Repeat this calibration at 50 and 80 feet. You now have a good feel for your line counter accuracy. This may sound trivial but the difference of 4 or 5 feet can be the difference between getting bit and not getting bit. There are still some fish in pockets on the main lake and creek mouths but more fish have been showing up over the river and creek channels. If you want to fish while you are searching, both umbrella rigs and lead core trolling is working. Set the Umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 7 to 8 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The water temperature is in mid to high 80’s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 2.0 feet below full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www. laniercrappieanglers.com

Crappie fishing remains fair to good. You may ask, “How significant is water temperature?” When we report a water temperature, it references the surface temperature. Fish make the necessary adjustments and move to deeper water where the temperature change is significant. Some fish move into natural timber, and some move to deeper brush piles, both those around docks or stand alone. So if you are fishing a private pond or reservoir that holds crappie, you will obviously fish the deepest part of the water. On Lake Lanier, you simply move to deeper brush piles. The crappie are currently holding on brush piles in 25 to 30 foot depths. The challenge that you will have is to feel the bite. The deeper they are, the less noticeable the bite will be. This is the reason high visibility line is important. I switched to 2 pound test high visibility line. Both soft body and hair jigs are working equally well, and chartreus color is producing best. One sixteenth ounce jig head is recommended to get your jig to the depth needed. Helpful tip: if you don’t get hung occasionally, you are not getting deep enough. Your Lowrance Down Scan is a must. Early morning until about 10:00 am is the best bite. However if you want to beat the heat, night fishing remains fair underneath bridges, with live bait recommended. Be safe on the water as the lake continues to be crowded, and wear your life jacket, it can save your life!
