Welcome to Big Time Catching Shark-Ville!

Captain Ken Kennickell is holding happy Rick Campbell on vacation from Midland, Texas’s just caught 8 foot lemon shark

And this is what Rick’s 8 foot lemon shark looked like out of the water and on the dock…

Rick Campbell while fishing with Captain Ken Kennickell of Miss Judy Charters, to say the least, caught a very big fish. This is an 8 foot lemon that was caught while bottom fishing with a fresh large whiting steak. We normally practice “catch and release” when it comes to keeping large sharks. However, Rick wanted to give shark steaks, shark bites, sharks gumbo, fried shark, BBQ Shark, and other great shark recipes a try. Once cleaned this shark yield about ten one gallons baggies of 1 inch shark steaks! And there is more…Now Rick has a fine set of shark jaws, some great pictures, and one heck of a fish catching story to share with others!! And that my friend is what fishing is all about!

Inshore fishing has been a little crazy!

The long of the short of it!

    A nice spotted sea trout!
And what do I mean by that?
    Real time inshore fishing!

Our inshore fishermen have been catching some nice trout and also some what we call shorts. These of course would be spotted sea trout that have not experienced much of a growth spurt meaning quite a bit less than 12 inches. However, with a little time these shorts will be keeping size, but right now they are the fish that we practice on until that time! The best live bait is going to be shrimp or mud minnows. And the best artificial bait is going to be a fluke, paddle, or screw tail soft plastic rigged on a ¼ ounce red/black/white/or lead color jig head. For those that want to seek out a larger spotted sea trout I suggest using larger live baits such as pinfish, yellow tail, or juvenile mullet.

    Working the Bank…

As far as the flounder bite it can be very interesting especially if you can find some clear water conditions. Back in the day while fishing with my father working the bank was his favorite saying when it came to going flounder fishing. At the low tide stage he would situate our rowboat just far enough from the bank so as to not to disturb those fish feeding in the shallow water. Then he would cast his bait offering of live shrimp rigged on to a Carolina type rig either to the left of the right of the bank that we were anchored on. And then we would wait for the bite, which normally started as soon as the tide turned to incoming. Now that most all fishermen have a trolling motor

    Plain Old Sound fishing!
It’s Trophy Red Fish Time of the Year!

Please meet Gavin Dunlap West Virginia and Captain Ken Kennickell holding his just caught red fish. Gavin caught this 43 inch red fish on the bottom in Wassaw Sound while using a live whiting as bait. Just proves once again there is always another larger fish in the sea!

    Artificial Reefs
Artificial reefs are holding Spanish mackerel, King mackerel, barracuda, and little tunny..and even a few scatted sightings of cobia.

Where you see birds feeding you most likely have fish down under!

    Savannah Snapper Banks
It’s Time to Snag a Gag!!

While fishing with her better half Captain Ryan Howard “Vindicator” Wendy Coates snag the gag of the week!

Captain Ryan has been catching some very nice gags and genuine red snapper on ocean size pogies. He has been catching these baits in the Wassaw channel while making way to the snapper banks. He suggest using a Carolina type rig with 8 ounce egg sinker, 15 foot of 80 pound test leader, and Mustard 5/0 3xstrong offset circle hook. With a set up like this, the right kind of bait, and of course the right location it is ever so possible to snag a gag.

Bottom fishing at the artificial reefs and Savannah Snapper continues to be slow meaning you can’t just drop and catch every time. You really have to work the bottom meaning drop to the bottom, wait, reel up a few feet, drop back again, and wait. If you haven’t had a bite after few readjustments of your bait it’s time to make a move back to the spot that you just drifted over. Catching is doable, but you got to work at it to catch!

Now here’s a good line to follow!
    Gulf Stream
I know I keep saying, “Not the best time to make this run!” However, as all fishermen know when you get to the big blue water all kinds of big fish catching is possible! I suggest if you find a nice day and you want to make the run that if you don’t score trolling give bottom fishing a try!

It’s time to wet a line

Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not!

Please meet my two new fishing friends!

Fred “Twinkle toes" Long, Captain Judy, and Wesley “Droopy” Clark
In the back ground is a skin mount chopper blue fish that was caught off our coast about thirty years ago! And that my friend is yet another interesting story!

I took the guys for ABC Supply August, Georgia this past week! And we all certainly did a lot of fishing and little catching. The first day they fished we went to the snapper banks. Our morning ride to the snapper banks was to say the least a weather event. After dealing with sheets of sideways rain, water spouts, winds of various directions, and lighting we finally arrived. As soon as I stopped the boat I knew we were dealing with a “Hoggly Woggly Ocean!” For those that don’t understand that term, well, this motion happens when the ocean sea condition hasn’t gotten in step with the current wind direction. Trying to stand up in a confused 3 to 4 foot can certainly be trying. When this happens I am glad to say I have rails on my gunnels that help the customers from basically tumbling out. Even though the catching was hard one of our fishermen still managed to put on a show. Fred took a tumble and made a graceful fall right on the deck. Before the continuous gushing water from the scuppers could get to him he jumped up and performed what later became known as the twinkle toes move. After thinking about it I decided exactly what Fred’s move reminded me of ….Remember Fred Flintstone while bowling would walk on his tip toes before rolling the ball down the aisle…well Fred Long is now call Fred Twinkle Toes Long!

For those that didn’t remember here’s a picture of Fred Flintstone’s famous twinkle toes bowling move! I just had to show you! Yab a dab a do! And after spending the day with Wesley I came to the conclusion that he reminded me of the cartoon character Droopy!

Droopy! What does all of this boils down too? Well, in my book lots of fun! Can’t wait to see my cartoon character friends again!
