Lake Conditions:
Barkley – 357.40, 25,500 CFS, light stain with water temps in mid 80’s
Kentucky – 357.40 36,000 CFS, light stain with temps in mid 80’s
Weather: It’s been a typical summer pattern here around the lakes this week. With warm humid conditions producing some popup afternoon thunderstorms. We had a cold front push through Thursday bringing some cooler temps and low humidity with it. The week ahead looks awesome with highs in the low 80’s and keeping low humidity and plenty of sunshine.
Bass Fishing: Well it’s been another week of the same. Though there has been a couple really good bags weighed in at some recent tournaments the overall bite still seems to be off from normal. You can find some small schools of fish on the ledges but it takes a lot of time staring at your electronics. We again spent most of our time this week shallow or mid depth areas keying on main lake points and even some close secondary points that had deep water. Outkast Tackle shake down shaky head with a Big Bite Baits finesse worm and Carolina rigs to entice the fish into biting. We have gotten into some early morning topwater action with walking type baits SPRO Dawg.
White Bass and Yellows: We spent most of our week chasing these critters around and why not they are more than willing to eat when you find them and make great table fare. With the current flowing throw Lake Barkley right now it’s been a much better bite. Over all presentation has been pretty simple as we’ve been either vertical jigging a blade bait or small spoon over schools that we find along main river channels, main lake points and humps. When the bite seems to get a little tough you can always drop a jig and minnow on them and they simply can’t resist that easy meal. Lake Barkley is where we’ve spent most of our time with pretty decent results. Most of the fish have been stripes and yellows with some nice whites mixed in. Anytime you’re using a blade bait like a Steel Shad you’ve got the possibility of catching anything and we’ve caught it all this week from crappies, largemouth bass and catfish.
Crappie and Bluegill: No report as we haven’t fished for these critters for a couple weeks. I have noticed there are quite a few around the docks feeding on insects and minnows that are feeding on the algae growing on the bottoms of the floats.
