LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 3.2 FEET, CLEAR & LOW 70’S

Bass fishing report by Jimbo Mathley, www.jimboonlanier.com

Bass fishing is very good. Conditions have remained stable over the last few days, and that usually makes for good fishing. We have been starting most mornings by working jerkbaits, swimbaits, and top water around humps. When the bite is slow in the mornings, work a Davis Shaky Head/Trick Worm combo as well as jigs and drop shots for the best success around these places. The fish often are VERY shallow, especially in cloudy or rainy conditions. We have been running this pattern most of the morning. Later in the day, we have been moving out to the brush and throwing top water such as a Chug Bug, shallow running jerk baits such as the Spro McStick, as well as a variety of swimbaits for some very good bites. Some of the brush is absolutely loaded now and coughing up big fish. The stripers have moved shallow and we are starting to catch those guys now a bunch too, especially on the swimbaits. Look for the schooling bite to really pick up over the next week or so. You may run across some massive packs of bass and stripers getting it done on top. The classic Lanier fall bite is on. I only have October 28th open this month. I am also booking for November and that month is starting to fill up as well. Give me a call ASAP to book your trip and get in on one of the most fun bites of the year on Lanier.

Striper fishing is fair. It happens every year. TURNOVER! As the air temperature gets colder the surface water cools and becomes denser. The denser water is heavier than the warm water and sinks, pushing the warmer water up. This “turnover” process continues until the water is mixed and reaches a consistent temperature from the surface to the bottom of the lake. The stripers are stressed when they move up through the water column and into the warmer water. It usually takes several weeks for the lake to stabilize and the fish to feed aggressively. Finding them can be difficult and if you find a school chances are then will not bite and move off. It usually take a couple of weeks until a shallow water bite develops. Live blueback herring fished on flat lines and planner boards will replace the deep water down rod pattern. We are also looking forward to a top water bite. The key for this week is to stay flexible and be prepared to fish deep and shallow. If you are not finding fish in the deep water move shallow and fish where you see shallow bait. We have a good number of 2 and 3 year old fish which should be schooling and aggressively busting baits on top. Keep your eyes on the water looking for surfacing fish. The fish are moving and can be found on the south end of the Lake from the Dam to Flat Creek. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 3 feet below full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404-561-2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www. laniercrappieanglers.com

Water temperature is seventy one degrees and gradually falling as night temperatures steadily dip into the forties and fifties. If you are fishing in the northern lake areas, you will notice cooler water temperatures and a change in the water color. As expected, we are in the typical fall pattern, and fishing conditions are excellent. Stand alone brush piles are still our major targets. The ideal brush piles to target should be at twenty foot to thirty five foot depths. Your Lowrance Down Scan electronics can help you determine whether fish are holding on the brush piles you find. Some brush piles will hold more fish than others. Our club members are reporting great catches. This is a great time of the year to get on fish and catch them steadily. If you can locate fish in deeper brush piles, thirty to thirty five feet, you may want to consider vertical jigging. The bite is very sensitive. Bobby Garland in different colors, Crappie Assassin, Jiffy Jigs and tube jigs are all working equally well. If you have a favorite jig, just try it. Chances are it will work well. If you are fishing with someone, try using different jigs and see what’s working best at that location. Expect the bite to continue getting stronger as the water temperature drops. Stay safe on the water, wear your life jacket.
