Fishing statement: To try to insure that fishing stays in the hearts of those that love it and to help the ones that are going too!

Captain Ryan Howard and first mate Captain Garrett Ross strike it again!

Huey Huval fishing party had a big catching day while fishing Captain Ryan Howard of Miss Judy Charters…Let’s see what did they catch?? Vermilion snapper, black sea bass, trigger fish, big amberjack, almaco jack, ocean perch, and black fin tuna. Yes, black fin tuna! This fish was caught while using Captain Ryan”s favorite live bait rig!

    Inshore fishing report
Fall is here! Yes, fishermen are still perspiring also known to most as just plain old sweating. However, for those that work outdoors all of the time we know that there has been a small change in the air as well as water temperature. For me it is the sound of the morning and evening insects, the sea smells, tedder- tottering of the water temperatures, and the way the boat sounds when it moves through the water. The bottom line is this…fall is falling right into place! Believe me when I say, “The fish have already started in the direction of their fall like mode!”

If you have been reading my reports you already know that this month is a great time to choose to fish. So with that being said, “Here are a few pointers for catching inshore fish old school Captain Judy style!

This is the month where all fish make a move, which means that they may or may not be at their standard hold up spots. While fish are making way they are always up for a feeding opportunity. Let’s talk fish or better yet let’s just think like a spotted sea trout. The spotted sea trout are known for corralling up shrimp and other small fish. They perform this feeding talent around/over structure such as oyster reefs, around eddies, and in rips. The fact of the matter is when they are schooled up and making a move if the school happens by a school of bait fish they will go into the rounding up mode. This art of rounding up by a trout can take place anywhere from the bank to right dab in the middle of creek, river, or sound. When and while this is happening feeding as well as “herding up” is taking place. A keen fisherman’s eye can catch this sort of a thing, but there are those that can really spot them much better. And that my dear fisherman is our fine feathered friends. Sea gulls are our best eyes in the sky and seem to always show up when down under feeding is taking place.

Normally when schools of trout are feeding the leftover parts/pieces are small, which brings on the attentions of the small sea birds. This is where the theory comes into to play called “Match the Hatch!” Spotted sea trout are known for rounding up shrimp as well as other small fish. Shrimp are self explanatory and of course are the preferred meal. However, they also like any sort of fish that fits into their feeding size such as juvenile menhaden, mullet, glass minnows, and etc. The bottom line to this suggestion is when you see birds feeding especially during this time of the year, I suggest checking it out. This is when you need to slow down and go into stealth mode, because you don’t want to disturbed the goings on between the prey and predator.

It’s time to put your winter moves into play when fishing these areas. Although I can’t say for sure I can certainly say most likely, because I have been there and done this for many years! Firstly water temperatures have dropped and fish are on the move. While bottom fishing with plain old squid and cut fish you could find yourself catch just about anything from regular bottom fish to a keeper grouper. As far as top fish, well, I suggest dragging something, because it’s that time where you could catch anything from tuna to king mackerel to dolphin.

    Savannah Snapper Banks
Miss Judy Charters…offers lots of fishing catching opportunities!

Captain Garrett Ross is holding us a nice black fin tuna that was caught at the Savannah Snapper Banks…I told you it was the migration time of the year! And if you want to go to the Gulf Stream…that is just about where all these blue water fish are heading!! Get there first!

    Mixed Catching Bag Affair!
This past weekend proved yet once again that when you fish this area you really do not know what to expect in regards to weather. The reason being is that there can be so many weather changes in one day that predictions mostly need to be thrown out the window. This is the one weather prediction theory that has been working for me…here goes…if the rock is dry the sun is most likely shinning, If the rock is wet, well, you guessed it, it is raining. Now here is where is can get darn interesting if the rock is GONE and can’t be found most likely there is a hurricane a brewing!
With all the swirling winds from our last fish storm there is so much half dead semi floating Sargasso weed that it made bottom fishing a little tough. When you retrieved your fish it was most always dressed up somehow. There was either grass on the main line, on the hook, or wrapped around the fish. My customers remarked that Halloween came early to the ocean this year!

As far as what we caught…well it was for sure a mixed bag catching affair. All of our offshore boats caught everything from black fish to vermillion to trigger fish to red porgy to white grunt to genuine red snapper to amberjack to grouper to Mahi Mahi. I guess you could say a little of everything was biting our hooks!

My father always said, “To catch a fish it’s best to keep a bait in the water!” Well, I say, “Sometimes fish don’t need a reason to jump into the boat!” But that is entirely another story! So keeping in mind with my father’s forever suggestion and even though the grass was terrible we pulled a single rigged ballyhoo. I rigged it old school while using a three hooks in a row rig. No one likes to use this rig, because they say it is too hard to rig and also no respectable fish would hit this trolled monstrosity anyway. Well, once again old school over rules what’s too hard to rig up and too stupid drag! We only landed one nice dolphin, but we had quite a few hits, misses, and angler error. No matter what, even if you don’t alway land your fish there seems to be always something to talk about when it comes to hits, misses, and errors!

    Gulf Stream Fishing!
Here’s what I know…about blue water fishing Saturday October 10, 2015 and I learned most of it while listening the VHF radio. I don’t have to tell those that fished how rough it got midday. The winds started howling from the south west to the west to the North West around 10:00 AM at the Savannah Snapper Banks. These winds became sustained at 20 knots plus for about 5 hours. So I can only imagine, since I have been there and done this many times that the blue waters of the stream were smoking high!
From the chatter on the radio it seemed that it was definitely a mixed bag catching affair. I listened as boats talked to each other all saying about the same thing, which was it wasn’t great! However, it seemed that all boats caught fish and had a great time! Cole “Hollywood” Yarbrough and the fishing catching Page boys had a great day while fishing on the “Spear’Em Deep 2! While lining their fish box with assorted fish that topped it off with throwing in a nice 50 plus pound Wahoo. And as I listened boat caught everything from black fins to Mahi Mahi to king mackerel to Wahoo make this fish day a big Yahoo! The bottom line is this…fall is upon us winter is right around the corner and it is time to go blue water fishing. It is not like the spring bite, but who cares it is still lots of fun and you really never know what you might catch!

Little Miss Judy’s Believe It or Not!

My father was something else for sure! Way back when before GPS’s, computers, and cell phones none of us knew that these little things we did would set the stage for catching fish. My father came up with some many ideas for catching fish that even when they didn’t want to bite it seems he could just make them! So this story, which I have called “Two Tone Technologies”, proves yet again why he always came home with fish in the box!
    Two Tone Technologies
Back in the good old days, my father would design his own lures. Take for instance a “Cisco Kid.” It didn’t come in but a few colors and most were of the one color. My father wanted a two-tone lure. So he would take the lure hold it up by the line it was tied too and then while using spray paint cover the top of the lure. The top was usually done in white or a light color. He then held the lure belly up and sprayed the bottom side. This underneath color needed to be dark. According to daddy the top half had to be lighter than the top and he had a good reason for it. Wait till you get a load of this. Upon examining a fish you will find that most fish had a dark top and lighter bottom. This color combination is supposed to help camouflage the fish from its predators. In my father’s case he wanted the fish to be seen and also to stand out. So he basically reversed the two-tone technology.
