This last front really got the bass turned on. We could have easily got 100 bass (not counting white and yellow bass) today. We probably got 80 today and we left em biting several times in search of bigger bass. Unfortunately, the big one got away this time (shook a deep diving crankbait). But there's a few big fish biting - and the big fish bite will get better as temps decline to 60 degrees. Today, we had 67 degree water temps (about as good as it gets).
The lake is currently a few inches above full, which is nice because I was able to go into a cove with trees right at the top of the water level without scratching my new boat. When it goes down a few inches, it will be very dangerous again. The lake is clear for the most part, but it has a lot of muddy coves from all the rain. Grass is pretty good. We had some 4-5 ft grass that just got flooded - and we have a lot of floating grass that has more water on it now.
This must have been the best spawn we've had in many years. We have tons of 8-16 inch fish. Which explains why best baits are small baits right now. Fish a small plastic on a drop shot, C-rig, T-rig, wacky, weightless, shaky head - you name it. They will eat it. Most of the fish I'm catching are over 12 feet deep. So heavy baits are best. I'm really catching a ton on tailspinners and spoons. They catch everything (including tons of white bass, yellow bass, catfish, and crappie). Today, it was mostly largemouth. So plastic baits were as effective as the lead.
The fishing's awesome and nobody's on the lake. Its a great time to come.
