  • Lake Fork Fishing Report - TX

Every winter, the water temp drops down to 50 degrees or below and the fishing slows down considerably. Normally, that happens before Christmas. This year, it didn't happen until the end of January. But it did happen!

At 52 degrees, we were catching great numbers of largemouths, white bass, and yellow bass. As soon as it got around 50 degrees, that bite was gone. I've been out 4 times since then and haven't had a decent trip since. Even with several warmer days to get it back up to 52, the bite is nowhere close to what it was before.

I don't expect it to get a lot better until the water temps get back into the 60s. Cold water fishing is not my forte. It is very difficult to boat more than a few fish in a day in cold water - and I just don't like to see people pay for unproductive trips. This year, I've decided to promote my strengths and only fish power plant lakes from now until the spawn is in full swing on Lake Fork.

Sight-fishing for bedding bass is my specialty. I can usually find bedding fish on Welsh and Monticello in February - and will definitely find them in early March. Water temps are usually warm enough on Welsch to catch fish on topwater lures in the winter. It's much more fun than fishing cold water.

If you haven't done so, check out my e-book on sight fishing for bedding bass. I believe it is the only book in existence, written solely for sight fishing for bass. The URL is www.bassfishing.org/spawnbook

If you want to get a good spring date, it isn't too late. But I only have 5 open days between February 28 and May 8. Those dates are March 7, 14, 15, 16, and 17 (for power plant lakes only). If you can go near the end of February, I have quite a few days still open. I recommend short-notice trips to Monticello/Welsch after a warming trend. With a short-notice trip, you can watch the weather and get a good fishing day when the weather isn't miserable.

If you want a chance to fish the spawn on Lake Fork with me, I still have May 9 available. There will be a few fish spawning that late every year. In fact, we got a 12.25# fish on a bed last year on May 7.

I don't have anyone on a waiting list yet. So, if you want a date from late March through early May, I can put you on a waiting list for the first cancellation. I expect to get about 5 cancellations (I do every year).
