    Feb. Fishing report

Redfish: The redfishing canbe very good in the winter months. When found, they are usually in largeschools. They may not run as large as the summer reds, but still very fun tocatch. Call ahead and get the good tides. Watch for large schools on the flats, get out in front of them and let them come to you. Don't chase them! Somepeople call it fishing for reds, I call it hunting. When poling the flats forreds, move very slowly and watch for wakes, tails and boils. When fishing themangroves, fish the top end of the high tide and get your fly, bait or jigunderneath the mangroves as far as you can. This technique will also produce afew snook. A great way to cover a lot of water and it can be very productive.Flies, artificials and bait all are working well for these beautiful strongfighters. Flyfish them against the mangroves and on the flats with a earth tonecolored clouser and for some real excitement try top water on the overcastdays. Average size about 18" to 30" with some larger ones around.Watch for those TAILS!!!

Snook: Snook are a littleinactive with the cooler water temperatures. They can be found near mouths ofcreeks, passes, canals, pot holes and points. White bait, pinfish, shrimp, cutladyfish, flies and jigs all will work. Fish them on a tide with good current,I prefer an outgoing tide. A well placed shiner or fly will result in a violentfight that you'll remember for a lifetime.

Spotted Sea Trout: Winter, means trout. You can almost catch one on every cast if you find that perfectsand hole, creek or grass flats. Fun on light tackle or fly this fish isaggressive. I've been fishing them in 3' to 5' of water over grass flats orsand holes.

Tarpon: Some resident fishbeing found in deep creeks. We await the return of the thousands of tarpon inmid April. We do best with live baits, but the fly and cut baits will work aswell.. These critters will range from 40 lbs. to 200 lbs. with the averagebeing around 100 lbs. The Silver King is a fish of a life time, very strongfighters and jumps that will out do any marlin. Either bait or fly, you owe itto yourself to fish for this species. Time to book your tarpon trips is now.May thru July will fill up fast.

Jacks, triple tail, mackerel, pompano, cobia, grouper, sharks and more! These fish and others arecommon on the flats and backcountry. When encountered they all are a lot of funwith tackle or on the fly. Contact the Capt. 239-282-9243
