February 2016 has been pretty cold by Florida standards, had frost on the boat a few mornings, water temperatures in the mid 50’s has brought clear water to Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River backcountry. Redfish are schooled in shallow water, big Seatrout sunning in the flats along with Reds on clear bluebird winter days, Sheepshead, Trout, and Bluefish some of our main target species in the backcountry creeks and channels. Shallow water flats is a hunting game in winter, sight fishing, casting select size live shrimp a primary tactic, dropping 1/8 oz. jigs with shad tails, gulp shrimp, and live shrimp a main technique on deeper drop offs and channels. It’s almost spring and during March will return larger Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and much more baitfish as the water begins to rise in temperature once again with winter in our wake. Reds and Trout will begin scattering out on the flats as winter schools begin the process of breaking up into smaller groups in a spring time pattern. Very longtime regular client Gene from Ohio brought his old friend Marty down for a 3 day charter with me recently, we mixed it up a bit fishing some different patterns, day 1 was shallow water Redfishing, good fun and success with 12 Reds landed and several more fought with pulled hooks, a great tone set on the first cast with Marty catching fish number 1.............................

..............Day 2 was very windy and cold so we went targeting variety fish in the backcountry out of the wind fishing deep holes back in the creeks, landed big numbers including Trout, Blues, Snapper, runt Reds, and Sheepshead.........................

...............Day 3 back out in the Lagoon, Seatrout were quite cooperative on the drop offs, landing at least 50 specks on jigs and live shrimp...................

A couple local snow birds from New Smyrna asked me for an instructional trip to get ideas on places and techniques to fish their boats so we covered lots of ground from Edgewater and down south into Mosquito Lagoon catching a few fish along our way, Ted with a good Red caught on a shad tail jig.......................

Mike from Deland received a gift certificate for a trip with me as a Christmas gift from his son, we went on a beautiful slick calm morning, getting on a school of Reds first thing and sight catching a few spot tails..........................

Another great early morning school of Reds allowing us to land a few at our first stop this morning of a multiboat charter I was invite to be in with 8 other guide boats involved, JD got the first one..........................
