• High Speed and Low Speed Trolling Suggestions

What I would do if I were you!!

The first thing that I would do is if the weather was good is to be pre-ready to take to the sea! As you know getting ready for successful blue water trip does take some pre-planning. However, if you are already half way there then you bottom line time for leaving will be better. During this time of the year the western edge of the Gulf Stream isn’t as defined as it is going to be in April. If it were me, I would focus on fishing the ledges such as the Triple, Deli, and South Ledge areas. All fish in the water have this already instilled in there basic feeding instincts. Another thing that I liked to do was drag a lure all the way to the stream. Back in the day I pulled 18 to 21 knot lures, which produced some unbelievable catches. Not only that, but it gave the customers something to watch. The down side is that these lures are very expensive! However, the up side and most important is that they work!! For those fishermen that want to pull what they have I suggest slowing down to about 8 to 10 knots and giving that a try. If you are going this route, please consider stopping at least 5 miles before arriving at the ledge and put these lures out. The reason being I proved over many a blue water trip that I ran over lots of fish on my way to the ledge. It seems us fishermen get what is known as Blue water tunnel vision, which works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t! Now with the help of current fishing reports from the Daniel Owsley’s blue water team we now know that high speed trolling doesn’t have to stop when you arrive. Heck, you can drag for a long as you would like! You can certainly change up at any time!
