  • Lake Guntersville More Crowded than Ever

If you’re a weekend fisherman you can’t help but notice the endless number of boats and fisherman at the ramps and in the area. If you drive on Hwy 79 between Guntersville and Scottsboro the number of boat truck rigs being pulled up and down that highway are endless. All good, well depends on your perspective, if you’re collecting taxes for the local towns I am sure it’s impressive; if you’re a local fisherman wanting to just get your boat in the water you might have a different view!

I can’t remember the last time this early in March that I have seen so many fisherman on the water this early in the year; the bad news is the fish are being pushed by every bait imaginable and getting a bite can really be tough. The measurement of what one might consider a good day of fishing has been reset; the days of consistent 20 to 30 plus fish with a 50 plus day in there every now and then of fish catches a day might very well be in the past. If you get 10 to 15 bites and miss a few your day gets degraded quickly and a good day has a whole new measurement. The thing about it is we all miss fish, and if your catch to bite hook is 1 to 3 well if you do the math that can make a good day a day with 4 to 5 fish, Ya! Different and concerning! Unfortunately this is where we are heading so don’t say I didn’t tell you so. Several years ago when I headed up and organization called the Lake Guntersville Anglers Association, I couldn’t get members to join, many thought I was crazy asking for the local towns to do some restocking to ensure that we have a nucleus of small fish. So here we are five to six years later and fishing is the toughest it has been maybe ever, there are basically no small fish and trying to do what we did just five years ago is extremely tough.

Well looks like the tough days are ahead maybe someone will take a leadership role and try to insure a future of bass fishing on Guntersville before it’s too late!
