The Overall Picture:

As of Monday, 04 Apr, the lake level continues falling and remains approx 8" above normal conservation pool. Decreased current in Little River w/gate discharge around 9,000 CFS as of Monday. Water temps slightly rose, over the past week. Navigation has improved, considered normal this week. Surface temps as of Monday, are ranging 60ºF early to 67ºF later in the day, depending on rain, wind, incoming fresh water, location, and time of day. Several boat ramps and parks campgrounds have re-opened from recent high water flooding. Some have not yet reopened and the Millwood State Park remains closed for repairs. The USACE are working to replace numerous river buoys missing along Little River since the recent 12-15 foot rise a few weeks ago.

Lake level as of Monday, is currently is 259.90 ft-msl, and slowly falling with river current. Normal consv. pool is 259.20 ft-msl. As of Monday the tailwater level was also falling, at 236.06 ft-msl.

Clarity and visibility has remained much the same over the past week, in most areas on main lake from past few weeks fluctuating water levels. As of Monday on main lake structure away from current, clarity & visibility ranges approx 6-9 inches. Little River's visibility is heavy stain to muddy depending on location and ranges from 3-6 inches depending on location and current. The oxbow's clarity ranging approx 10-15 inches depth of visibility depending on location. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, rain, or thunderstorms.

The Details:

Largemouth Bass: The Bass feeding mechanism continues to improve to the more stable weather patterns & temperatures over the past week. Warmer days, sun, and more stable weather pattners have the bass in a feeding mood. Recently, many nice bass have been caught in the 3-5 lb class, with many more between 6-8 lbs each, over the past couple weeks. Best activity period appears to be shifting to late morning, in the best water clarity you can find. Best reactions over the past several weeks continue to be on chatterbaits, lizards, big bulky 10" worms, and spinnerbaits. Swim baits are starting to turn on over the past couple weeks, as well.

During the late morning, and throughout the afternoon, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits continue working in fire tiger, black/blue, or Tx Craw, colors. Over the past couple weeks, the chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and big 10" worms have really been working well for Largemouths from 3-4 pounds. Bang Die Dapper and Boss Shiner swim baits are working rigged on a swim bait belly hook using 3/16 or 3/8 oz weight in Mama's 14K, ProBlue/Red Pearl, and Silver Flash Minnow. Bass Assassin Shads in Grey Ghost, Mississippi Hippie, and Bad To The Bone colors are catching nice 3-4 lb Largemouths in newly sprouting lily pad stems and shoots near cypress trees. Fat Jobs are working wacky rig, up river in the oxbows in the same areas. Best colors of Fat Jobs over the past couple weeks has been Houdini and Blueberry. Lightest wire hook you have will give best action around fresh vegetation, and wacky rigged will get you bit in a hurry.

Red Shad, Toledo Gold, and White Zombie Rat-L-Traps are working on warmest days in creek channels deflecting off stumps and timber, near spawning flats around cypress trees/knees. Echo 1.75 squarebill crankbaits are working outside spawning flats where creek channel bends wind near the bank and out again. The Echo 1.75 crankbaits are catching good numbers of Largemouths and White Bass equally well. Best color of Echo 1.75 squarebills over the past couple weeks with the muddy and stained water have been the Chartreuse Flash, Red Crawfish, or Oxbow color patterns. War Eagle spinnerbaits in Chartreuse/white, and Firetiger were taking nice Largemouths up to around 4-5 lbs last week along vegetation lines and dead lily pad stems in Mud Lake and Horseshoe.

Real Deal Custom Tackle jigs are working for 3-5 pound Largemouths in 1-5 feet of depth where best clarity away from Little River current is you can find. Best colors working over the past couple weeks have been the Texas Craw, Grasshopper, or Habanero, using a green pumpkin/chartreuse or black trailer. Several largemouths in the 4-5 lb class were caught over the past few weeks near stumps and cypress trees hopping and swimming the jig in 2-3 feet of best clarity we could find of 8-12" visibility.

White Bass: Schools of Whites are still biting between White Cliffs and 71 Bridge at Wilton and Patterson Shoals. Backwater sloughs feeding Little River, just out of the main river current, were holding some good schools of whites over the past several weeks. These Bass were hitting Echo 1.75 squarebill crankbaits, Rat-L-Trap Tail Spinners, Little Georges, Little Cleos, and medium running cranks from 4-9 feet depths. These White Bass are beginning to wrap up their annual spawning run up Little River and starting to scatter in large schools.

Crappie: continue improving and have been caught over the past several weeks hugging cypress trees in 3-6 feet of water on jigs, small spinnerbaits, rocket shads, Blakemore Roadrunners, and on yo-yo's using shiners

Cats: Cats continue biting consistently over the past week in Little River on trot lines using cut bait, chicken hearts, and gizzards, set 12-16 feet deep.

Wear your Life Jacket and kill switch!! If you are suddenly or unexpectedly thrown from your boat, it could be your only chance of survival. Use caution navigating Little River in low light conditions, SLOW DOWN, and pass friendly to other boaters! As always, careful watch for any random floaters and debris in Little River's current, and wearing your PFD and kill switch is a requirement!
