  • Lake Fork Fishing Report - TX

Lake Fork looks good right now. The current lake level is 402.77. Full pool is 403 feet above sea level. So it is just about full. The wind direction has been inconsistent, rarely blowing the same way for more than a couple of days at a time. So the water hasn't been very clear, especially on the northern ends. But there's quite a bit of grass - and a lot of flooded buck brush, giving the fish a lot of places to hide.

The most inconvenient times are definitely the best times to be fishing right now. The first 20 minutes of daybreak and from late afternoon until well after dark are by far the best time to fish for largemouths. Because of this, I plan to do mostly evening and night trips from now through the rest of summer.

We are catching most of our bass on spoons, tailspinners, swim baits, crankbaits, traps, and jigs. For that 20 minute period of daybreak, most days its a frenzy - and it doesn't matter what you throw to get bit. Once they get full (which is usually only 15-20 minutes), the bite slows down to its normal slow pace. This is when I go deep and fish mainly spoons and tailspinners. I make my own 3/4oz tailspinners and spoons ranging from 1/4oz to 2oz. I also use storebought spoons. But we catch more big largemouths on my homemade versions.

The white bass have really taken over the lake. I haven't been counting fish, but I wouldn't be surprised if we're catching over 100 fish on average in a full day. This is one of the reasons I like to fish spoons. White bass and yellow bass primarily feed on shad. So, we get a lot more bites throwing shad imitations over plastic worms.

There isn't a better time to take a beginner or child to get hooked on fishing. Because the daytime bite is so much better for white bass than for largemouths, I have decided to change my hours and my focus. I now plan to promote taking kids fishing and making short videos to preserve the memories.

This is the time to take the young kids and grandkids. I have all the fishing, safety, and video equipment. And the fishing is good enough that I will guarantee (or its free) to get every kid on video with a fish. In most cases, I will have the video edited and uploaded to Facebook/Youtube the same day.

Do you have young kids/grandkids? Don't wait around. The younger the kid, the cuter the video. Perfect ages for video are from about 4 to 10 years old. But older kids will have a blast as they will catch lots of fish. Kid fishing trips are up to 3 hours (2 hours on Saturday) if your kids have the attention span. We should only need an hour or so to get a good video clip.

Rates are $200 for 3 people (2 kids and an adult - or 2 adults and a kid). Disregard the posted rate when you book online.

For my regular customers, I'm still offering night trips from 8:30PM to daybreak. We've already had some good trips at night, including a 10 pounder last week. But with the lake level at full pool, and most of the stumps just an inch or two under the water level, I don't want to put my new boat through the extra abuse right now. I expect the lake to drop for the summer. Once this happens, I'll be more likely to promote the night fishing.
