LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 1.15 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 70’S

Bass fishing is good. The fish are in still in their post spawn "funk", but they are starting to recover and getting more active. The morning bite for spots and stripers has been good with a variety of baits to include: jerkbait, swimbait, topwater, spinnerbait, and a fluke. The focus with these baits should be fairly shallow on flats and shallower rocky points and humps as well. The fish continue to move deeper each day as they make their way out to the summer brush locations. We are starting to see a lot of schooling fish in the early mornings over various types of structures, such as humps and road beds, with some of the activity being over deep water. Catching these fish, which are often big ones, requires a precise cast to the area of activity. Set up your rigs to make long casts to be ready for these situations. When the fun stuff bite slows down, switch to a worm on a 3/16 ounce Davis Shaky Head and work it slow. A Chattahoochee jig has continued to perform well also. Experiment with the different baits to figure out which the fish prefer that day. Focus on main lake rocky points and on secondary points as well. The brush is starting to hold fish in some locations around the lake, and soon they will mainly be found on the man made brush. Remember that the post spawners are often lethargic and will be for another week or so. Slow down when the bite is tough and go to the worm or jig as discussed above. A fluke is often a good choice on these less aggressive fish also. The full blown all day top water bite is just days away. This will be a fantastic bite and not one to be missed. I only have a few days left in June, so be sure not to miss out on the fun! Here is what I have open in June: 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30. Give me a call and let's go fishing

Striper fishing is very good. The top water bite last week was very good early and on cloudy days. The Red Fin and Spook has been the most successful top water baits when fished on points and humps. You can run and gun points by pulling up and casting 3 or 4 times on a point and then move to the next point or you can use your trolling motor to thoroughly cover an area with top water and a couple of free line Herring. After the sun gets up we are switching to Umbrella rigs fished over a 25 to 35 foot bottom. We are using a three ounce four arm rig with nine one ounce Capt. Mack’s buck tail jigs with white and chartreuse 4 inch shad bodies. We always start out with one rig with white and one with chartreuse shad bodies. Some days they only want white and some only chartreuse. Pull your rigs at 70 to 80 feet behind the boat and troll at 3 to 3.5 MPH. Look for this pattern to change soon as the water temperature rises. The fish will move deeper, the top water and Umbrella rig bite will show and the down rod Herring bite will “kick in”. The South end of the lake outperformed the North end this week. The lake temperature is in the mid 70’s and rising. The lake is one foot below full pool. The water is clear on the main lake and stained in the backs of the creeks. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Water temperature is still in the low seventies. The month of May has been a good month for Crappie fishing on Lake Lanier. The secret to catching crappie this time of year is to use the method of “run and gun” (targeting as many docks with structure as possible). Using your Lowrance Down Scan and Structure Scan will greatly assist in finding these spots. There are a lot of fishermen on the lake, and it is getting busier with recreational boaters as well. We’ve been catching good numbers of fish targeting docks in fifteen to twenty five feet of water, mostly three quarter pound to one and a half pounds in weight. When you start catching smaller fish, move on. Also, some fish are on submerged brush piles in fifteen to twenty feet of water. The brush piles with tops about 10 feet below the surface are producing best. Your electronics will help you determine whether there are fish on the brush piles or not. If there are, throw a marker buoy and fish the whole brush pile by circling your buoy to find the best angles. Stay off the brush about thirty feet, cast your jig past the brush pile and retrieve slowly while shaking your rod. This will give the jig more action. You will get most of your bites ten feet below the surface either directly over or slightly to the side of the brush pile. Our preferred bait is still one twenty four ounce soft body jigs or hair jigs. Fish are aggressive, so the color doesn’t seem to matter, but if the bite slows, switch colors. The night fishing bite is still not producing well. Once the nights get warmer, that bite will pick up.
