  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 3.1 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 80’S

Bass fishing on Lake Lanier has been good this past week. The US Army Corp of Engineers continues to pull water through the week and therefore the lake levels are continuing to drop. The lake currently is a little past 3 feet below full pool. The early morning bite for spots has been good with a variety of baits to include topwater like a Chug Bug and a Gun Fish as well as a plastic swimbait on a Picasso Swim Head. We have been working humps and points with access to deep water. Fish are typically around areas with brush, but not always. The early morning bite has been mainly a schooling bite. Catching these fish, which are often big ones, requires a precise cast to the area of activity. Set up your rigs to make long casts to be ready for these situations. After the morning schooling bite, we have had good success running and gunning brush piles around the lake with topwater baits such as a Chug Bug and a Vixen, as well as with a SuperSpin. Work the topwater baits over the brush and expect a response from any active fish within the first few casts. If you get no response on top, switch to a SuperSpin and swim the bait around and over the brush. When the moving bait bite slows down, switch to a drop shot worm and work it vertically on fish you can see on your Lowrance. Focus on main lake rocky points and on secondary points as well, and remember sometimes the fish are relating specifically to the brush, so make sure to work the brush thoroughly as well. Here is what I have open in July: 2(AM), 10(AM), 11, 12, 13, and 20(AM), 27, 28, 29, and 30(AM). Give me a call and let's go fishing.

Striper fishing is good. Summer is here and the fish are moving south and deep. The majority of the fish are south of Chestatee River which is exactly where they should be this time of year. Summer time fishing is when your electronics really pays for itself. Last week we caught fish at 25 feet over a 40 foot bottom, at 80 feet over a 100 foot bottom and in the creeks from Browns Bridge to the Dam. Your Lowrance Structure Scan is the ticket to locating these fast moving summertime fish. If you want to fish while you are searching an area the umbrella rig is a good choice. Pull the Umbrella rigs at 70 to 90 feet behind the boat at a speed of 3 miles per hour. When you find them you can pull your Umbrella rigs up and put out baits or continue to use you Umbrella rigs to catch fish. The down rod bite with Blueback Herring has been strong and will continue to be the primary technique through this summer. We are using a 5 foot 12 pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and a two ounce slip egg sinker tied to 20 pound Seaguar main line for our down rods. You can also jig with the Ben Parker Spoon while you are down rod fishing to get a reaction bite when the fish just don’t want to eat. We have also had some success with lead core line this week pulled at 7 colors. All of the creeks south of Browns Bridge are holding fish. Baldridge, Shoal, Young Deer, Six Mile, Two Mile, Orr and Flat are some of the creeks where fish have been caught over the past week. The lake is 3 foot below full pool and clear in the creeks and main lake. The lake temperature is in the low 80’s.
