LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 4.7 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 80’S

Bass fishing is fair. Not much has changed in terms of the fishing since last week. The water level is down a couple of tenths and the surface temps are still in the mid 80's. The rains continue to come which has slowed down the fall of the water level, but it is still trending down. The first hour or so of the day has been tough for the spots, so, we have been targeting Largemouth for the first 90 minutes or so. We have been focusing shallow in pockets and on points for these fish. Topwater poppers, a Prop Bait, a swim jig, and a small shallow diving Spro crankbait have all worked in these areas. As you would expect, the fish have been very shallow. After the early morning bite, we have been working humps and points with close access to deep water. Fish are typically around areas with brush, but not always. A drop shot presented to fish you see on your Lowrance has been effective, especially as the day progresses. The better fish are often in the 30 feet range or deeper. Also, you can work the topwater baits and soft plastic swimbaits over the brush and expect a response from any active fish within the first few casts. If you get no response on top, switch to a SuperSpin and swim the bait around and over the brush. Focus on both main lake and creek mouth points and hump and remember sometimes the fish are relating specifically to the brush so make sure to work the brush thoroughly as well. Use the Lowrance DEPTH RANGE in AUTO. Brush in 20 to 28 feet has been most productive this week. There are even more fish that are positioned out deeper in the 35 to 40 foot range as well, on the first break out from the brush piles you will be targeting. The spots have really started to spread out in these deeper areas, and you will often find them relating to timber tops and edges. A SuperSpin and a big flutter spoon can be effective to catch these fish when they are active. Here are the dates I have remaining in August: 24, 25, 26, 30, and 31 Give me a call and let's get out and have some fun! Thanks to all and May God Bless.

Striper fishing is very good. We caught fish this week using all four of the primary summertime techniques; Blueback Herring on down rods, trolling with lead core line and Umbrella rigs and jigging with Ben Parker Magnum Spoons. We stated in our last report that trolling with lead core line was probably the least expensive way of Striper fishing. Consequently we have gotten a number of questions regarding setting up a lead core rod and reel. The key is to have a reel big enough to hold 10 colors (300 feet) of lead core line plus 50 feet of backing and 50 feet of monofilament leader. We use Penn 3330 reels for our lead core however, your local bait and tackle store is probably your best source to recommend a number of reel options with the capacity to hold 10 colors of lead core line. Lead core line comes in a number of odd test strengths. We use 36 pound test Cortland Lead Core line and 50 feet of 40 pound test monofilament backing and 50 feet of 20 pound test monofilament leader. We almost exclusively use Captain Mack’s one ounce buck tail Jigs with a 4 inch shad body trailer. We typically start out with a white and a chartreuse trailer. Some days the Stripers only want white and some day’s only chartreuse. If they are aggressively feeding color is usually not a factor. Deploy your Lead Core line 8 to 9 colors and troll at a speed of 3 to 3.5 MPH. Remember to speed up to 5 to 6 MPH when making turns to avoid getting hung up in the trees. The fish are showing up in deeper water from Flat Creek to the dam off the river channel. The mouths of Orr Creek, Flowery Branch, Six Mile and Two Mile creeks are also holding fish. Your Lowrance HDS sonar with side and down imaging are critical in finding these deep water Stripers. Keep moving until you find the fish. The water temperature is in mid to high 80’s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com
