  • Pickwick Lake Fishing Report - TN

    Pickwick Lake Elevation 413.5
    Water Temp. 85
    BASS
If you get out earlyenough you can catch bass on top water baits, in the lake I like to use aStrike King sexy dawg and below the dam in the river ( Kentucky lake) I like touse a Strike King Spitn King. In the main lake fish main lake points close to deepwater. The later in the morning it gets the more important it is to fish apoints with deeper water close by. In the river just fish on the main riverbanks, try to fish a creek mouth or any area where the water runs over the topof shallow rocks. Top water baits seem to only last from 5am untilabout 6:30.If I am fishing in the river I will switch to a Strike King Series 3 crank baitand fish along the banks, fish tree tops and rocky bluffs and chunky rocks thenstick with the most productive one of the three. If I am catching fish on amain lake point on top water baits I will stay there and throw a Series 3crankbaits along that point and all around it. If it is a productive spot youcan usually catch a limit of fish on that one point from around5am-7am. An alternative to fishing main lake points is fishing big grassyflats with top water baits and sometimes the top water bite last longer in thatsituation, when I am finished fishing a top water bait on a grassy flat I willchange to a Strike King Red Eye Shad or shallow running crank bait. You willhave an easier time throwing a 1/4oz Red Eye Shad above the grass inthese areas but I have caught bigger fish throwing a 3/4oz Red Eye Shad. Whenthrowing a 3/4oz make sure you start cranking it pretty fast as soon asit hits the water or it will load up on grass before it starts moving. Big fishare in deep water right now, I have been catching fish on 10"Iguana Lizardon a carolina rig and a Strike King one once Spinner bait also works well.White and white and chartreuse are the only two colors that I used this week inthese deep water areas.
    Stripers
Stripers are bitinggood again. The last trip we caught all the skip jack we wanted on live baitrigs, the ones with 5 or 6 small hooks on them. We caught the skip jack closeto the dam. The only way we could count on catching stripers was drifting withthe skip jack minnows. We caught them two different ways. We fished a carolinastyle rig with a two oz. sinker and made 20' cast close to the boils anddrifted back down stream. The other way is to only tie on one hook and use alarger split shot sinker, make a long cast by the boils and let approx. half aspool of line out while drifting back. Either method worked and they bothworked well. Just remember to cast short with the heaver sinker or you will bespending a lot more time hanging up and re-rigging then you will fishing.

    Catfish
Catfishing slowed downaround below the PickwickDam where I have had the best luck over the pastmonth. I started moving downstream and started catching more fishdrifting in the current. I had been catching fish on worms and cut bait, butthe live baitgotharder to find. I tried Dyna-Bites in Catalpa Worm flavor and in shad flavorand it worked out well for me. We caught several catfish drifting theDyna-Bites in 20-25' of water. I like to fish the Dyna-Bites on a size 1 hook with a medium action rod with a once sinker if possible.
