October… wow, how fast it comes and goes. I hope you all got in on that awesome ling action. Those shoals have fired once again. I truly hope everyone went up there and wiped it out! What an absolute joke. Lets destroy our future fishery just because we can. 13 cobia? Sure why not? Lets just freeze them for the year. It was as usual picking fish out of the barrel! Go Ling! They are pretty much a “dumb” fish so they will eat pretty much anything. The best baits are a bucktail by T&A Jigs tipped with a whole small squid or the live bunker. Find the rays and you’ll find your lings. Remember the laws. It changes outside that 3 mile zone. King action as I might add has been epic to say the least. The local reefs have been firing. I highly suggest taking the time right now to find the live bait. If it takes an extra hour I promise it’s worth it. Sometimes live bait is not the only bait but it widely opens your chances to catching other fish like the random 100 pound wahoo on the shoals or the 60lb mahi you see free swimming the weed line. If the free swimmers aren’t around drop that live bait to the bottom on a three way. I can’t tell you how often we saved a day dropping those livies to the bottom and whacking the endangered Red Snaps or hooking into some nice gags. Live bait includes, bunker, pins, thread fins and scalies (sardines), but honestly if I catch it in the net or on a sabiki I always throw it in the live well. Sometimes saving that last bait to the end has paid off. Get out there to your normal reefs and ship wrecks. Go fish! Its what we do, its what makes us tick. Good luck!
