    Water Temp 73
    Lake level 354.90

Things are really getting good here on the south end of Kentucky Lake. The cool fall weather has dropped the water temperatures back down to bring the bait and bass into the shallows. Most of you may no there’s no grass this year so fishing Kentucky lake is a little different.

I have 34 years of experience on the lake and it’s not the first time I’ve fished the lake without grass. Until it grows back an angler will want to look for harder bottoms. Rock is best over gravel but if you don’t know where the rock is I would suggest fishing gravel.

The patterns may change to where the bass are but they will be following the bait this year. With no grass and no place for the bass to hide and wait to ambush the shad as it migrates towards it shallow water. The bass is forced to follow its migration.

Something else that will change as the water cools off is the baits that the bass will react to. I’ve seen it to many times over the years that water temp has a lot to do with what lures to fish from day to day.

The baits that I keep rigged on my Lews rod and reels will be top water baits with Zara spooks being my number one choice and hen a buzz bait. I will also keep a spinnerbaits rigged and a swim bait with a ¼ to a ½ ounce Pro line lures twist lock swim bait head. I’ve been using this swimbait head for years and it’s the best one I’ve ever used. I will also keep a shallow square bill crankbait rigged and a vibrating bait.

One other thing I will do is to keep a follow up bait nearby and I like a ZOOM tube or Z craw on a ¼ or 3/8 Pro Tungsten worm weight. Fishing shallow water you’re going to have some fish short strike your lure that’s when I will fire the Tube or Z craw at the fish and I have a high percentage of follow up catches this way. Also another good follow up bait is a ZOOM fluke! Keep your eyes open for any wood cover you may see and flip the tube around it.
