  • Putting Together a September Pattern

As we get further into the fall and the bass move more into their traditional patterns, I thought I would give you some clues for establishing a September pattern that can catch fish. One of the most important things to look for in September is finding the shad; nothing produces more bites in the fall than this very important part of bass fishing. That old saying "fish where the fish are" in this case it’s the bait the shad that the bass feed on in the fall; if you find the shad you find the bass.

September generally starts to bring the cooler weather and one of the things I look forward is that first couple of cool nights; you get up in the morning, the temperature is somewhere in the low 50’s, it’s cool and there is wet dew on the grass. When I see this I leave the deep water areas, channels, deep road beds etc and I head to the coves in the creeks. Generally speaking by this time many of the bass head back to these areas and leave you plenty of fish to catch away from the deeper water. The bait fish should be present, if not your in the wrong creek, look for the shad, baitfish moving about and you will find the bass.

Lastly start searching the water with search baits, today’s world has many, like rattle baits, Punisher Spinner baits, swim baits these all give you a bait you can work thoroughly through-out an area until you find the fish. The key is to cover water with persistence, stick-ups, lay-downs, cover and the like; fish it hard throw at it many times and be persistent. I believe if a place looks fishy it probably is, if there is bait fish about and the activity level is there you will find the bass just approach it from different angles, techniques until you get a bite.

Another search bait that many people don’t think about is Assassinator Buzz baits, they search from the top, but they find fish and can be deadly in September. Work it different ways, just barely moving over the top and or ripping it as fast as you can! Keep searching, look for baitfish and you can easily put together a great September pattern!
