Scott Patton Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report 1-17-17
Lake Okeechobee has been really good this week. We had a cold front that slowed it down and cooled off the water. Now that the weather is stable the fish are feeding! It’s just going to keep getting better!
The fish have moved in towards spawning areas. I’ve seen lots of beds but I know there’s a lot of fish yet to spawn. The key is to find clean water.
I’m catching fish several ways and on different baits. My best days on artificial has been with a swim jig with a ZOOM Z Craw for a trailer. Black and blue has been good and white has done well. I’ve caught fish up to 9 pounds this week on the swim jig!
I have caught fish up to five pounds on top water also, using a Lucky Craft Sammy in shad patterns.
Also I can catch some fish fishing a ZOOM speed worm in watermelon red with a 3/16 Pro Tungsten weight in the boat lanes and scattered eel grass and gator grass.
Still catching fish flipping the hydrilla mattes with a 1 ½ to 2 ounce Pro Tungsten (protungsten.com) and a ZOOM Z craw in black and blue using Seaguar Braid. These fish have been better quality fish in the mattes. This is another pattern to use when the sun is high.
The shiner bite is really good as well catching some big fish and lots of numbers!
Lake Okeechobee is only going to get better so make sure to book your winter fishing trips soon.
