LAKE JACKSON IS DOWN 1.55 FEET, 50’s

Bass fishing is slow. Fish can be caught relatively shallow in 3 to 12 foot of water, but more of the better fish may be found grouped up in the deeper winter holding areas. Flat side crank baits like a Shad Rap have shallow bite potential when working rock, warm pockets, and docks with brush. Also work points, humps, and bluff banks on the main river channel or appropriately deep water. Locations with deep, hard, and rocky bottom, will be more likely to hold concentrations of fish. The key to finding deep active fish is to find a group or stay with the bait. Sun on rocks, wood, docks, and stained water will draw fish shallow when located adjacent to deep water or in a pocket. The waters will warm in the afternoon so expect the warmth to improve the bite in general. A warm afternoon will particularly improve the crankbait bite. A relatively tight action Craw DT 10 can also be worked on a chunky 6 to 10 foot bottom. Fish a slower falling ¼ ounce Net Boy jig on docks with some depth and on the bluffs. Also, fish 1/2 to 3/4 ounce Net Boy football jigs slowly through the deep water holding areas. Use a brown jig in clear water and a black/blue jig in stained water conditions. Go with a brown or green pumpkin Zoom Super Chunk Jr. on the natural color jig and a green pumpkin or black Super Chunk Jr on the black/blue jig. Shaky heads will also work on 8' or deeper docks and deep water structure. Rig them with trick, a finesse worms and Senkos. Shorter Finesse worms or shortened Tricks will get more hook ups when the bite turns slow, short, and subtle. Slow down your presentations and fish a 1/8oz head when you can get away with it. Carolina rigging can be helpful to your worming in some cases. If the wind is blowing and/or you are targeting deep water, a 1/2 or ¾ ounce bullet weight and 26" leader can give you a worming advantage. Spoons and the Little George are also picking up deeper bass relating to bottom and bait. A relatively subtle soft yo yo action on the spoon should perform best when fished just above the bottom or to fish elevated in the water column. Fish spoons 16' and deeper, and stick to clear water for best results in spooning.
