Bass fishing is good. The fish are ahead of schedule with all the warm weather we are having. We have set just below 10 feet below full pool for several weeks, and for the first time in a LONG time, we are just ABOVE 10 feet down. The word of the day is shallow gang. The fish have been very shallow over the past week. The ditch bite continues to be good and we are catching them using the traditional ditch fishing methods, SuperSpin, Jerkbait, Jig, and Picasso Shake E Head. Start back shallow in these ditches early, and remain shallow through the day. Focus on the key features you find shallow near the ditches as well such as clay and rock points. We are starting in ditches and staying in them through the day as well as working shallow pockets just off the main lake or main creek channels. Most days we are focusing in 15 feet of water or less. We are starting with a SuperSpin tipped with a boot tail type trailer right in the ditch. Also, a Spro McStick or McRip has been a good choice as far as jerk baits go, in addition to a Megabass Vision 110. A finesse worm on a Picasso Shaky Football Head or a Chattahoochee Jig has been a good alternative if the fish are not as aggressive. As the sun gets up, check the shallow docks in ditches and pockets for activity. Work a jerkbait beside these shallow docks, as well as a jig and worm. These fish are already starting to stage in preparation for the spawn. You will find spots and largemouth in these places.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West 404 561 2564. Contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing has been good but the weather continues to play a major role. Not a lot has changed this week. The birds have been a major asset in finding feeding stripers this past week. The stripers have been aggressively feeding on small threadfin shad on warm cloudy days and the sea gulls have been a major asset in finding the fish. Because the stripers are feeding on small threadfins medium minnows have been working better than herring. Deploy unweighted free lines with a medium minnow on a #4 or a #2 Gamakatsu octopus hook. We switched to a 10 pound test fluorocarbon leader on some of our rods this week to see if using a 10 pound leader versus 12 pound makes a difference. Hope to have some results next week. The fishing has been slower on colder sunny days than warmer cloudy days. Keep someone on the front deck casting a ½ ounce bucktail jig casting and retrieving a small spoon will also work. The south end of the lake is more consistent than the north end. The stripers have been on the move and you can find them in the backs of the creeks all the way out to the mouths of the creeks from 2 feet of water to over an 80 foot bottom. The lake is 10 feet below full pool and the water is clear on the main lake and slightly stained in the back of the creeks. The water temperature is in the low 50’s. My advice: GET OUT ON THE WATER AND FISH! We are fishing the pre spawn. This means you can find fish on deep water docks, on shallow water docks, and if you happen to be in a flat area, you will see there are many fish roaming, either feeding or checking out their spawning grounds. With warmer water temperatures, the bait has abandoned the deep water, moving up in the water column. This has resulted in an abundance of bait for the crappie to feast upon prior to their spawn. And they are fattening up, and willing to chase the bait. This morning the water temperatures was 54 degrees, with the water having a moderate stain in the middle to the back of creeks. Fishing is good to excellent and this is the time that just about everything works. If you are into shooting docks, there are plenty of fish on docks. Some docks are of course holding bigger fish than others. If you are into trolling, this is a great time to do that. The back of Four Mile Creek, Little River and Yellow Creek provide wide, flat areas great for long line trolling. Since the fish are feeding well, color of the jig body does not matter, so use whatever you have confidence in. Don’t forget to take a few minutes to change your line if you haven’t fished in several months. This will allow you to avoid fighting the curls and line twists and make your trip more enjoyable. We recommend four pound test, high visibility line, which will assist in seeing the bite easier.

Stay safe on the water, wear your life jacket!

Another reminder: if you are on the water in cold weather, it is even more important to wear your life jacket, as a fall can be serious with the threat of hypothermia. Be safe on the water, bundle up and enjoy fishing during the lower traffic winter months.
