LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 6.6 FEET THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 70’S

We are just back from the Indy 500 and running trips again this week. We are pleased to say that not much has changed with the bite since my departure, except that it has gotten better. The lake has come up a foot since last week, and the average water temperature has cooled a couple of degrees all perfect ingredients to keep the top water bite HOT! The top water bite remains dominant and we are chasing it every day, all day. To sum it up, if it walks, pops, spits, wakes, chugs, or swims, it will catch fish right now! Focus on offshore structure with cover, such as brush on humps and points, for this approach. The bite seems to be better in the middle of the day than any other time, but we have are still seeing some good morning schooling activity this week as well, for which the top water lures have been excellent. Just throw it in the action and hang on. Wind blown points have been the best places for this action. The fluke has continued to produce well also in the same type places. Work it fast and then kill it and let it settle. Vary the cadence until you find what the fish want. The fluke can be a good option when there is no wind. Also the swimbait bite has returned and has been producing some good fish. We have been using the Sweet Herring and a Sebile. Same places as mentioned for the top water bite. The only other thing we are throwing with any consistency is a SuperSpin. We are using this bait in the same areas as we do for the top water as another option if the fish won't come up.

Striper fishing is good. Fishing has been crazy this past week. We caught fish on top water with a Chug Bug. We caught fish on free lines both weighted and un weighted with Herring. We caught fish on down rods at 20, 30, 50 and 70 feet down. We also caught fish on umbrella rigs. We caught fish over a 40 foot bottom and out over the river channel at 120 feet. While this sounds great, the problem is the fish could be anywhere at any time. Things are changing. The lake is transitioning from a spring to a summer pattern. The lake is “setting up” from a temperature point of view and there is a very clear thermocline at 20 feet in some areas of the lake. It is time to get out your lead core line, umbrella rigs and Ben Parker spoons. Start looking for fish from 20 to 70 feet over a 40 to a 120 foot bottom. Set your down rods just above the fish and under the fish. If you are marking fish at 30 feet do not hesitate to set you baits from 25 to 70 feet The only common factor last week was the fish were caught south of Browns Bridge and in the main lake and creek mouths. The lake is 6.7 feet below full pool and the water is lightly stained on the main lake and heavily stained in the back of the creeks. The water temperature has risen to the mid to high 70’s.
