  • Savannah Fishing Report - GA

While inshore fishing with Captain Garrett of Miss Judy Charters Quint Crowder Charlotte NC caught fought and release this nice red fish. Now this is an interesting red fish for sure! Why and it’s not just because of its prefect size it’s more about the spots its sporting! They don’t usually have this sort of pattern. How many sets of eyes do you see? Well, let’s see, one, two, three, four, and half sets! What is considered a half set of eyes? One spot that stands alone. My father always said, “Each red fish spot or twin spots represent the times that a red fish has escaped from the feeding jaws of a dolphin aka porpoise!” So this fish, if using my father’s equation got away 4 ½ times. I guess that ½ time resulted in the lost of part of its tail fin!
    Inshore Synopsis!

Even though my inshore captains did pull it off this past week it was a hard job for sure! And here’s why?

Well, well, we had windy conditions and heavy isolated rain fall instances causing lots of muddy water scenarios. That statement right off the bat causes much confusion for the fish as well as those trying to catch them. I always say, “Fish are a lot like fishermen, because sometimes when it rains a lot and windy conditions prevail neither comes out to play.” However, the good news is that there are some that do! So let’s talk about them!
Live shrimp continues to be an issue, at least in our area. (Turner Creek and Wilmington River area) I am not saying don’t try to catch your own shrimp I am just suggesting to have a backup plan! And if you can purchase them before heading out I suggest doing so! There is always other fish that makes for great bait especially at this time of the year. These baits can be found in the creeks and rivers. The list of possible catching baits while throwing the old cast net goes like this: peanut menhaden, finger mullet, yellow tail, and any other small fish. The secret to using this sort of bait is that it is suggested to always try to match the hatch. The means some larger baits will not work when targeting spotted sea trout, red fish, or flounder. However the smaller ones will!

If you think the bait caught will fit the hatch by all means keep it alive and use it! You won’t be sorry!

What is a hatch when it comes to a fish? Basically it is the mouth of the fish! Certain fish have grand abilities when it comes to eating certain size fish/bait. For instance: You don’t think a flounder’s mouth is that big, that’s until you open it. The hinges on the old flounder’s mount enable this fish to really stalk and successfully swallow much larger baits than a spotted sea trout. A spot tail bass also known as a red fish’s mouth design is a little different also. If the red fish can **** its intended meal into its mouth, the rest is crushing history! The bottom line the more you know about the mouth design and the feeding history of fish the better chances you have for selecting the right bait!
Bottom fishing in the sound has been very productive. However, since I have been doing this a lot lately due to rough ocean conditions, it can also be hit and miss. The secret to catching in the sound especially in a small boat while using a trolling motor is to find a spot, drop to the bottom, if no hits don’t occur, it’s suggested moving a bit up or down the bank that you have picked to fish. In my case, since I am fishing out of a larger boat, instead of moving I just swing on the anchor, which provides me quite a bite of new bottom to fish. There is one thing I can say about the whiting bite this past week and it was on one day and not the next! But then I guess you could and I did say “that’s why they call it fishing and not catching!

When plain old bottom fishing in the sound the most likely fishy candidates are going to be whiting also known as the southern kingfish, summer trout better known as weak fish, flounder, and all kinds of sharks from juvenile to the bigger biting boys. (Some are girls too!) To get a better handle on what’s legal to keep I suggest picking up a copy of 2017 Georgia Sport Fishing Regulations booklet or going to www.gofishgeorgia.com (http://www.eregulations.com/georgia/fishing/)

Picking up a copy of this 2017 regulation booklet is a very good idea, because it lists all the do’s, don’t, what fish is legal to keep, sizes, bag limits, and offers up some pretty darn good reading! Heck, it seems every time I pick one up I learn something! So I suggest giving it a try!
