  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 5.4 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 80’s

Bass fishing on Lanier remains good and we are still getting some quality fish around brush on off shore structure such as points and humps. Not much change in the approach over the past week. The top water bite is still decent albeit more inconsistent. Most days will offer periods of good top water fishing, but count on having to do some other things during parts of the day to get bit. On the top water side, a chug bug, a Sammy, a whopper Plopper, and a fluke have been my main choices for top water, and a Sebile for a swimbait. Focus on offshore structure with cover, such as brush on humps and points, for this approach. We are still focusing on brush in 18 to 25 feet of water, but start looking at the deeper stuff as well, up to and including timber edges in 35 feet on the same type structure. Focus on the areas that offer close proximity to much deeper water. We are still seeing a good schooling bite most mornings. What they will bite changes from day to day. Bring it all with you. LOL. When the fish are schooling, pay attention to the size of bait they are chasing. Match the size of your top water to the size of the bait on which the fish are focused. The drop shot bite continues to improve and it is a good option when the top water bite slows. I have been using the Lanier Baits offerings. Candy seems to again be the best color this week. Remember, Fruity Worms Rule! Also, look for the SuperSpin bite to really improve over the next few weeks as the fish become less and less willing to come to the surface. Work these baits around points and humps with brush and vary the areas of the water column you work until you find the sweet spot. I am fully booked for July. Here are my next open dates: August 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. Now is a great time to learn off shore fishing for summer bass on Lanier! Deep humps, hidden points, and ledges are a focus now Give me a call and let's get out and have some fun!

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West 404 561 2564. Contact us on our web site. www.bigfishon.com

Striper fishing is very good. We have been catching Stripers using Blueback Herring, Lead core line and Umbrella rigs. The bite for us continues to be Blueback Herring on down rods early and trolling lead core line and Umbrella rigs mid to late mornings. Down rods with 20 pound test main fluorocarbon main line, a 2 ounce weight and a 6 to 8 foot 12 pound test fluorocarbon leader is your best approach. Vary your down rod depth from 30 feet to just above the trees or just off the bottom depending on the trees. We are using “heavy” Umbrella rigs consisting of a 3 ounce frame and 9 one ounce Captain Mack’s chipmunk jigs with white or chartreuse 4 inch shad bodies. Set the Umbrella rigs 130 to 160 feet back and troll at a speed of 28 to 3.2 MPH. Keep your eye on your Lowrance HDS and if you see a tree less than 30 feet power up to jump your rigs over the trees. Set the Lead core line at 7 to 8 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH with a one ounce jig. Tip your jig with a white or chartreuse chad body or Blueback Herring. We have had a number of questions concerning the rational for the type, length and size of leaders. The following are some considerations and the rational we use. The objective is to select a line that will maximize the number of bites and is strong enough to land, with a little luck, the Lake Record (48lbs). The considerations are the type, length and weight of the line. Do not skimp on the type of line. Use high quality fluorocarbon line for both main line and leader. We recommend using 20 pound test fluorocarbon main line. The smaller the leader line size the less weight the bait will have to carry, resulting in a more active bait fish. Stripers love to chase their bait and the lighter the line the better. Because Lake Lanier has a lot of trees at 30 feet below full pool you have to select a line that allows you to “manage” a hard fighting Striper without getting hung up in the trees. We recommend using a 6 to 8 foot fluorocarbon leader from 12 to 17 pound test. We use a 12 pound test leader in the summer months for our down rods. Typically, we are fishing deep with very little boat movement. As a result, the bait fish must do all the moving and the lighter the line the more active the bait. The 12 pound test strikes the proper balance of bait activity and fish management when we are fishing down rods with very little boat movement. We tested 12 versus 10 pound test line last year and concluded the lighter 10 pound test line broke off, pulled the hook and got into trees considerably more than 12 pound test without any increase in the number of bites. As a result of our tests we do not recommend leader line strength less than 12 pound test. In the fall and spring we troll from .8 to 1.5 mph. For the most part we are towing the bait fish and can use a heaver line. We use 15 pound test leaders for both free lines and down rods in fall, winter and spring. We use 17 pound test leader when fishing Herring in rivers with current. We use Seaguar fluorocarbon line. It should be noted that some fishermen believe they get more bites using 10 versus 12 pound test line. The water temperature is in mid to high 80s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 5.3 feet below full pool.
