  • Scott Patton Fishing report for Kentucky Lake 8-10-17

    Water Temp 85
    Lake level 357.72

It’s been a mild past couple weeks here on Kentucky Lake and the lake level is falling. This is causing the bait and bass to start an early migration this year.

I am looking for migrating bait and I like fishing a top water like the Lucky Craft Gun Fish or a Sammy in the shallows or on the main lake gravel bars. The bass on Kentucky Lake just love this walking and spitting action of the Gun Fish. I can cover a lot of water with this bait.

If it’s a slick day with no wind I will go with the Sammy. Keep an eye out for any bait. A lot of anglers don’t realize it’s our gizzard shad that will migrate to the flats first. And the quality bass follow them. On windier days or over cast I will use the Gun Fish. Shad patterns in both of these lures are the best colors to go with.

Also use a square bill crankbait like Lucky Crafts 1.5 and 2.5 on the shallow flats looking for feeding fish. A ZOOM swim bait in the creeks and secondary bars have caught some good fish. It’s that time of year when you will want to cover a lot of water looking for what I call free roaming bass that will chase the shad where ever its decides to go.

There is a flipping bite if you can locate some wood, lay downs or stumps in the shallows, this cover is holding some fish. I will use a 3/8 Pro Tungsten weight with a ZOOM Z Hog or Z craw on 20lb test Seaguar Fluorocarbon on a Lews Flipping stick.
