LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 5.7 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 80’s

Bass fishing is good. Well, the humidity is back, along with the rain, but the temperatures are remaining low for this time of year. This is keeping the water temperatures down as well. The fish like it. The fishing on Lanier remains good and we are still getting some quality fish around brush on off shore structure such as points and humps. We are still seeing a good schooling bite most mornings and it has been lasting upwards of 2 hours. A smaller swimbait has worked well this week on the schooling fish. Also, a Spybait is a good option as well when the fish are on the move but not eating your larger offerings. Throw that little thing out and let it sink to about a 10 count, then SLOWLY retrieve. On the top water side, a chug bug, a Sammy, a whopper Plopper, and a fluke have been my main choices for top water, and a Sebile for a swimbait. Focus on offshore structure with cover, such as brush on humps and points, for this approach. We are still concentrating on brush in 18 25 feet of water, but the deeper stuff, up to and including timber edges in 35 feet on the same type structure, is holding fish as well. You will find some of the big girls out there right now also. In general, focus on the areas that offer close proximity to much deeper water. Those areas will now hold the best numbers and size of fish. The drop shot bite continues to improve and it is a good option when the top water bite slows. We continue to use the Lanier Bait offerings with good success. Apparently Fruity Worms do rule. Make sure to rig your drop shot with 6 or 8 pound test Seaguar Fluorocarbon in Infix or Abrazx. Here are my remaining August available dates: 14, 15, 18, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 29, 30, and 31. Now is a great time to learn off shore fishing for summer bass on Lanier! Deep humps, hidden points, and ledges are a focus now Give me a call and let's get out and have some fun!

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Magdalena of Big Fish on Service 404 561 2564. www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is good. The down rod bite picked back up this week and the fishing has been good all day due to the overcast skies and rain. The fish have been in the water column from 35 to 100 feet. When you find a school deploy your down rods at various depths until you find the best depth to use. Look for the shallow (35 foot) fish to be aggressive early and the deeper fish to fire up mid to late morning. We have also had reports of the Ben Parker spoon working. Drop these big magnum spoons below the fish and reel it up through the school. Stand where you can see your Lowrance HDS and use a line counter reel to ensure you are not dropping the spoon into the trees. Try the 83 kHz frequency on the sonar. Keep a top water bait tied on and look for Stripers feeding on the surface? That’s right, it’s August and you can find Stripers on the surface! Also pitch a Blueback Herring out the back of the boat when you are down rod fishing. You may pick up an extra bite or two. Last week we offered the following tip: When you see the fish coming up off the bottom to look at your bait, reel your bait up 5 to 10 feet to get extra bait movement. This technique has worked well this week; try it. Umbrella rigs are working but we did not spend a lot of time pulling them because the down rod bite was working. We are using “heavy” umbrella rigs consisting of a 3 ounce frame and 9 one ounce jigs with white or chartreuse 4 inch shad bodies. Set the umbrella rigs 130 to 160 feet back and trolling at a speed of 2.8 to 3.2 MPH. Keep your eye on your Lowrance HDS and if you see a tree less than 30 feet power up to jump your rigs over the trees. Set the Lead core line at 7 to 8 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. We are using 9 one ounce Captain Mack’s chipmunk jigs with a white or chartreuse chad body or Blueback Herring. Main lake pockets and creek mouths from Flat Creek to the Dam are holding fish. Keep moving until you find 3 to 4 fish. Deploy your down rods and if you do not get bit in 10 minutes; pull up and keep searching. The water temperature is in low to mid 80s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 5.8 feet below full pool.
