  • Running Hot When It's Cool

With the end of summer, most people consider the fishing season over. For a lot of anglers that's true. We only try the waters on warm, pretty days. But others enjoy the challenges and rewards of late season fishing. In some lakes, fishing from September to January is the best of the year. So, for those looking for that trophy fall fish, here are a few tips.

In September, the weather can be more pleasant than at any other time of the year. Early in the month, while temperatures are still quite warm, trout fishing is very good at all of Kentucky's trout spots. In early to mid-September, smallmouth stream fishing is some of the best of the year. Midmonth provides good fishing for hybrid white bass at Herrington, Barren River and Taylorsville lakes.

One other note that deals with fishing -- September is the last month to apply for pond stocking.

The month of ghosts and goblins is also a good fishing month. In October, the average water temperature in lakes is 70 degrees. When lake temperatures begin cooling, overall fishing improves. Early in the month, try for trout in the Lake Cumberland tailwaters. Tricking a trout can be a real treat.

In November, give thanks for some of the best overall fishing the Bluegrass State has to offer. Early in the month, crappie fishing is hot, especially in western lakes. Also, try trolling medium crankbaits for trout at Laurel and Wood Creek lakes. Early in the month is probably the best time, but this method can be effective all month long. For smallmouth anglers, November is a great month to get to the fishin' hole. For those who enjoy muskie, the action is good at Cave Run and Green River lakes, especially in mid month. Late in November, striper fishing is good at Lake Cumberland. This is a great time for that late vacation or long weekend at the lake.

In December, Santa might give you an early gift. Sauger fishing is good below Ohio River dams in the early to mid part of the month. And just like Saint Nick, striper fishing is at its peak around the 25th. One of these monster fish would be a present for any angler. Just don't leave it under the tree.

Slipping into winter, here's a little something to help bring in the new year. Early January is a good time to try live bait for smallmouth at Dale Hollow and Cumberland lakes.

Remember, when the weather starts cooling things off, don't put up the tackle box. Try some fall fishing. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised. After all there's still plenty of time for hunting and watching football.
