LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 6.0 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 70’s

Well another week of unseasonably warm weather is in the books. Both the main lake and creeks in the lower lake are sporting clear water. The fish are very near where they will be as the water cools, specifically at the mouths of creeks around points and humps. However, they have pulled out deeper with this warm weather over the past 10 days. There continues to be a good schooling bite just after daylight in the mouths of the major creeks around points and humps. After that, we have been focusing on location more similar to a late summer pattern – namely, places very close to deep water. We have been throwing 3 things most days all day: top water, swimbaits, and a fluke. A Sebile and a Chug Bug have worked well on the schooling fish. After the schooling bite slows, we have been running steeper points and humps close to deep water as a general rule. Stay back off of these locations further than you normally would, as you may find some schooling through the day over the deeper water as you approach these humps and points. Be on alert as soon as you take the boat off plane, as the schooling can initiate quickly after your arrival. Look for the cool front that is coming this weekend to change things significantly. We anticipate the fish to be back up shallower on these same places I am referencing. Once the water gets back to the mid 70’s or so for water temperature, we should start seeing some outstanding top water and swimbait action.

Striper fishing is fair. The problem this week has been the high pressure, bright sun with a blue bird sky and a full moon. The Stripers are feeding early morning and the fishing gets tough after 9:00am. The lake is in the process of turning over which means some of the Stripers have released from their cold water habitat while others are in the deep water typical of the summer time pattern. We need the water temperature to cool a little more to complete the turnover and fire up the Stripers. Until then your best bet is down rods with blueback herring set at 40 to 60 feet. Don’t forget to check your baits often as the Herring will not stay alive at 50 or 60 feet in some locations. The storms forecast for next week could help and we may see the top water bite return. Keep your eyes on the water to identify any surface feeding activity. The typical top water baits will work for surface feeding Stripers. Red Fins, Chug Bugs, Spooks and ½ ounce buck tail jigs are all good choices. It is also time to get out your planner boards and free lines as the deep water bite will be giving way to a shallow water bite any day. The bottom line is the lake is in transition and will take a week or two complete turnover process. We have been fishing the south end of the lake but will try to check out the mid. Lake area within the next week or two. The water temperature is in the mid 70’s. The water is lightly stained in the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 6 feet below full pool.
