  • Lake Oconee Fishing Report - GA

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL 70’S, BY CAPTAIN MARK SMITH, REEL TIME GUIDE SERVICE.

Lake Oconee is full, the water temperature is 73 to 77 deg. Most of the lake is clear with some stain up the rivers.

Bass fishing is fair to good. There is a strong top water bite from the I20 Bridge south to river bend. White buzz baits fished along sea walls and bridge rip rap have been producing will at first light. Then switch to a small crank bait or rattle trap, fish these around boat docks and the deeper sea walls. There are a lot of fish in the middle of the coves in the middle of the lake. These fish are not relating to anything, so they are hard to target. They can be caught with a crank bait fish from the 10 to 15 feet water depth. They will show up on your Lowrance. When you see them you can target them with a crank bait.

Striper fishing is fair at best. If Georgia Power is pumping back into the lake in the morning there is a good spoon bite at the dam. If not then the fishing is slow and poor. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools in the middle of the coves and you can catch them with spoons and live bait. It will get better as the water cools. We are seeing signs that the fall bite is on the way.

Crappie fishing is good to very good. The fish are still on the submerged timber from 5 to 15 feet deep. Use your Lowrance to locate the trees with the most fish on them and then drop live bait or jigs into the top of the tree. This will produce good catches of crappie.

Make sure you stop by Sugar Creek Marina and pick up your spoons and all your tackle needs. You can also book your crappie and striper trips as well as on the water Lowrance classes, with Reel Time Guide Service at 404 803 0741 or reeltime@bellsouth.net
